Who is Andrea Bocelli?
Andrea Bocelli, (September 22, 1958), Italian tenor noted for his unique blend of opera and pop music. From a young age Bocelli was afflicted with congenital glaucom. Undeterred by his lack of sight, he managed to practice law as a state-appointed attorney for a year after graduation before deciding on a musical career and studying voice with tenor Franco Corelli.
Bocelli’s breakthrough came in 1992, when he was asked by Italian pop star Zucchero Fornaciari to record a demo of “Miserere,” a song intended for renowned vocalist Luciano Pavarotti. The next year Bocelli signed a recording contract, and his debut album, Il mare calmo della sera (1994), brought him further attention in Europe. In 1995 he released Bocelli, which featured the single “Con te partirò.” He later recorded the song as a duet in English (“Time to Say Goodbye”) with Sarah Brightman, and both versions became hits.
Bocelli’s popularity in the United States grew in 1997 with the release of Romanza—which collected songs from his previous albums and eventually sold more than 15 million copies worldwide—and with repeated PBS airings of his live show Romanza in Concert: A Night in Tuscany.
What makes his concert famous?
With large gatherings out of the question this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the beloved Italian opera star, 62, will perform a Christmas concert, Believe in Christmas, live-streaming from an empty opera house in Parma, Italy, the famous Teatro Regio di Parma, on Dec. 12.
Filmed in the round, the multi-camera event will include songs from Bocelli's latest album Believe, which was released on Nov. 13. The program — which Cirque Du Soleil's Franco Dragone served as the creative director for — also promises a full-orchestra accompaniment and special guests: French soprano Clara Barbier Serrano, Bocelli’s 8-year-old daughter, Virginia..., People reported.
Bocelli further teased the concert on his Instagram on Monday, captioning a photo of him and Virginia:
"Virginia's eyes will be the eyes of the world: as she looks over the wonder of the theater and the magic of Christmas, she will lead us by the hand in a special journey, a celebration made of music, spirituality, happiness and wonder (thanks to the visionary direction of Franco Dragone), made of warmth, kinmanship, and optimism, the gift we most wish to receive this year. For one day, Virginia will be the host... and you will be her guests." |

“I will never forget the moment I was alone in that huge (cathedral) square, to sing for so many people so far way,” Bocelli recently told USA Today. “My goal was to pray for the world, for my family and for me.” Bocelli, who contracted COVID-19 back in March, has remained musically active during the pandemic. A week after his Easter recital, he joined Lady Gaga’s “One World: Together at Home” — a virtual music festival that raised nearly $128 million for COVID-19 relief, the Deseret News reported. |
