Scottish Highland Games, Scotland

The Braemar Gathering, which even the queen has been known to attend, is where the Scots seem to love to congregate in order to dance, play bagpipes, and throw enormous logs, and there is never more fanfare than at this event. The Highland Games are not just a strength competition (although you will see plenty of tree-trunk tossing and stone-heaving), but also a celebration of music and dance, with events like the Sword Dance of Gille Calum, bagpipe competitions, harp circles, and Celtic singing.

Visitors and locals alike assemble to watch the Southern Right Whale Migration and to celebrate this natural wonder with talks, events, and exhibits. Of course, a lot of the discussions center on how to preserve our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them.

Burning Man, USA (August 30, Monday – September 6, Monday)

Burning Man is probably one of the most unique festivals around the world. Held every summer in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, this famous festival attracts travellers from all over the globe.

Although Burning Man is formally an art festival, it is much more than that! The desert setting transforms into a transitory city, populated by costumed visitors who are free to express themselves completely. It has a sort of "anything goes" vibe, is anti-consumerism and self-expression focused, and ends with the burning of a huge man effigy.

Ganesh Chaturthi, India (September 10)

One of the most anticipated upcoming festivals in India is Ganesh Chaturthi. It is one of the September holidays that is most widely observed. A lot of people decorate their homes with clay idols of Lord Ganesha during this festival, which honors his arrival. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is on September 10. In some places, the festival can last up to 21 days.

Regata Storica, Venice, Italy (September 5)

Venice is well-known as a bustling tourist destination, for its sister islands that are all different colors, and for the ebb and flow of leisurely (and pricey) gondola rides along its azure waterways.

Rowers surround the island on the first Sunday in September, and rowing fans congregate in the city to watch the annual competitions and take in the colorful opening parade along the canals.

POP Montreal International Music Festival, Canada (September 22 – September 26)

What started as a music festival has, 14 years later, evolved into a full-on cultural happening. More than 50,000 visitors drop in each year for visual art exhibitions, fashion shows, symposium discussions, film screenings and live musical performances, not to mention an all-night party or two.

Les Festes de la Mercè, Barcelona (Event date not yet confirmed)

Parades, street parties and free concerts are just some of the more than 600 events hosted in Barcelona’s parks, plazas, boulevards and museums during this 4-day fun-fest. Expect spectacles like folk dancing, fire runners and ‘human castles’ rising 8 stories high around every corner, so keep your camera at the ready.

There are many reasons to visit Hawaii, including its stunning beaches, breathtaking mountains, world-renowned hospitality, and some of the best surf in the world, but each September the island state adds another. Their annual Aloha Festival, which is largely free, attracts tens of thousands of tourists and island residents for the hula-dancing, lei-wearing, craft-making, music-playing, and luau-filled celebration.

Bestival, England

The UK festival season is coming to an end, which is a good excuse to throw one final big bash. As a family-friendly season finale, Bestival shows a softer side of the festival scene. It offers something for everyone, from an open-air spa to crowdsourced artwork, dance lessons, eclectic music sets, and the Bestival Inflatable Church, where hundreds of couples exchange vows each year. A word of caution: don't even consider showing up without a costume. Visit one of the tents housing the costume workshop if you're lacking in inspiration.

Hindi Day (September 14)

India's national holiday, Hindi Day, is observed on September 14 each year. The adoption of Hindi as one of the nation's official languages took place on this day in 1949, and it is celebrated on this day each year as a result.
