How many Billionaires in Japan? Who is the richest?
In the list of top 50 richest people in Japan 2022, there are 45 billionaires. The richest man Tadashi Yanai owns $27.9 billion, aged 73 and ranks 43th in the world.

Tadashi Yanai built and runs Tokyo-listed retail clothing empire Fast Retailing, parent of the Uniqlo chain.
Fast Retailing's other brands include Theory, Helmut Lang, J Brand and GU.
The company reported net profit of $1.5 billion for the fiscal year ended August 2021 on revenue of $19.4 billion.
Shares fell in 2021 because of rising cotton prices and lower sales in Japan and China.
Yanai wants his company to become the world's largest retailer, which means it would have to surpass H&M and Inditex (parent of Zara).

Who is the oldest billionaire in Japan?
Nobutoshi Shimamura-96 years old-built one of Japan's leading discount retailers, publicly traded Shimamura Co. The chain has more than 2,200 stores, including shoe stores and those overseas. The company's overseas stores are in China and Taiwan.
Nobutoshi Shimamura retired more than two decades ago.

He founded the company in 2004 and took it public in 2008.
Tanaka is the company's chairman and CEO; he owns a substantial stake.
Japanese billionaire flies to the moon
Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa said that K-Pop star T.O.P. will be among the eight people who will join him on a flyby around the moon on a SpaceX spaceship next year. The Japanese tycoon launched plans for the lunar voyage in 2018, buying all the seats on the spaceship. He began taking applications from around the world in March 2021 for what will be his second space journey after his 12-day trip to the International Space Station on the Soyuz Russian spaceship last year. The eight people Maezawa selected for his “dearMoon project” are T.O.P., who debuted as a lead rapper for the K-Pop group Big Bang; American DJ Steve Aoki; filmmaker Brendan Hall and YouTuber Tim Dodd, also of the United States. The other four are British photographer Karim Illiya, Indian actor Dev Joshi, Czech artist Yemi AD and Irish photographer Rhiannon Adam. American Olympic snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington and Japanese dancer Miyu were chosen as backups. |

Yusaku Maezawa has more than 7 million followers on Twitter. On New Year’s Day, he announced that he will give away $9 million to 1,000 of his Twitter followers. However, the deadline to follow him was on Jan. 7. On Jan. 1, he tweeted: “What happens if someone who can’t help themselves with their own power is given money called ‘the opportunity’ (1 million yen this time) to rebuild their lives? Can you turn your life around? Isn’t it possible to give an opportunity in society as a whole, instead of letting it work because it is up to you?” |

Japan had 27 billionaires on the Forbes list of 793 billionaires in 2006. They had a combined worth of $67 billion, less than India’s 27 billionaires who has an estimated worth of $99 billion.
The economic crisis in 2008 and 2009 clearly hurt Japan’s rich, The combined worth of the 40 richest people in Japan declined from $89.9 billion in 2008 to $69.5 billion in 2009.

Japan has a monk billionaire Kazuo Inamori, the founder of Japan's no. 2 telephone company and a $6 billion computer chips manufacturer, suddenly decided to retire in 1997 and become a monk. Famous for combining religion teachings with business techniques, Inamori reportedly was inspired by a book about religion that given to him when he was bedridden with tuberculosis at the age of 13 and thought he was going to die. In spite of failing to get into one of Japan's prestigious universities, Inamori managed to secure a chemical engineering degree and get at a job for a company that made insulators. Angered by the company’s lack of enthusiasm about his passion for ceramics, he quit in 1959 at he age of 27 and formed a new company with seven coworkers called Kyocera Co. with money from a $10,000 loan. By 1997, Kyocera Co. was a $6 billion company that dominated the world market for ceramic casings for computer chips. When Kyocera became successful, Inamori became an inspirational speaker, lecturing and writing about topics such as "For People and for Profit" and "A Passion for Success." Kyocera employees revered him as if he were a religious figure, attending daily philosophy meetings at 7:00am before work began. One employee told the New York Times, "I felt electricity when he was near." |
