Since premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Florian Zeller's The Father has gone on to earn widespread critical acclaim and six Academy Award nominations.

The drama, which is adapted from the 2012 French play Le Père, follows an elderly man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who struggles with leaning on his daughter, Olivia Colman, as he begins to develop dementia. Both Hopkins and Colman earned Oscar nods for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Other nominations include Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Production Design.

The Father: Where to watch

The Father film hasn’t made its way onto streaming services as yet, and this includes Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, though it is highly likely it will at some stage, according to Yorkshire Evening Post.

Some films, such as Coming 2 America, have made the jump straight to streaming with the closure of so many cinemas around the world due to the Covid pandemic.

But The Father looks like it will hold out for a theatrical release when the cinemas get the green light to open up once more, with 17 May the earliest date this could happen.

It is in the third phase of the government’s roadmap to gradually relax coronavirus restrictions as England emerges from a third national lockdown.

Where to Rent The Father? Unfortunately, on-demand services like Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube won't be offering customers The Father until Friday, March 26.

However, some interested cinephiles may be in luck, as The Father is currently available for in-person viewing at select theaters.

The Father: Casts

The cast of The Father brings together a wealth of talent, experience and energy, fronted by multi-award winning actors Sir Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman.

Hopkins (The Silence of The Lambs, Nixon, Hitchcock) plays the part of Anthony, the title character, who is going through some changes during old age.

His daughter Anne, played by Colman (The Night Manager, The Favourite, The Crown), regularly visits him - but not all is as it seems.

The star studded cast also includes Imogen Poots (That Awkward Moment), Rufus Sewell (Judy), Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense), and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock).

The Father: Plot

A former engineer, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) doesn't want to leave the luxurious London flat where he's lived for many years. When his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman), who lives with him, announces she's leaving to live in Paris with Paul (Rufus Sewell), Anthony worries about what will happen to him, Show Times reported.

Anne worries as well, because her father is showing signs of dementia. Sometimes he's perfectly fine, but other times he doesn't know who she is. He also sees a man he doesn't recognize in his flat, who says he lives there. Anne decides to hire a nurse named Laura (Imogen Poots) to take care of him, but despite Anthony's initial positive reaction to her, he vows he doesn't need a caregive and can take care of himself.

However, when he can't find something, he asks Anne if he's in his own flat, because it suddenly looks different to him. He even becomes suspicious of Anne, wondering if she's playing tricks on him to make him believe he's not all there.

Based on the play by Florian Zeller, who directed this movie.

The best film about the wages of aging since Amour eight years ago, The Father takes a bracingly insightful, subtle and nuanced look at encroaching dementia and the toll it takes on those in close proximity to the afflicted. Fronted by a stupendous performance from Anthony Hopkins as a proud Englishman in denial of his condition, this penetrating work marks an outstanding directorial debut by the play’s French author Florian Zeller and looks to be a significant title for Sony Classics domestically later in the year, Hollywood Reporter commented.

First performed in France in 2012, the play has elicited hosannas wherever it has appeared, notably in Paris, where it won the 2014 Moliere Award for best play, in the U.K. from 2014 to 2016, and in New York, where Frank Langella won a Tony Award for his lead performance in 2016. Christopher Hampton did the English adaptation and receives co-screenwriting credit here.
