England will face Senegal in the Round of 16 at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Sunday, Dec. 4, with kickoff at 22:00 local time in Qatar.
The Three Lions topped Group B — ahead of rivals Wales, USA and Iran — with Gareth Southgate's side unbeaten in their opening three games in Qatar. Aliou Cisse's Senegal recovered from a opening defeat to the Netherlands to pick up successive wins, against Qatar and Ecuador, to ensure their spot in the knockout stages.
England vs Senegal: Sam The Cat Predicted a Draw
Sam hit the cup of England to eat the food underneath first then he continued to hit the Senegal’s cup. That might be a draw in the official time, he predicted.
England have never faced Senegal before in World Cup or non-competitive action so it’s difficult to predict the match result. But comparing strength of both teams, England seems stronger.
England will know that they cannot start slowly against Senegal, much like they did against both USA and Wales.
Senegal are by no means pushovers, and can take the game to the Three Lions, who must set the tempo and control the game. If they can then it should be relatively straightforward - or as straightforward as it can be for England at a tournament.
England's first meeting with an African side at a World Cup came in 1986, as they were held to a 0-0 group-stage draw by Morocco. Italy 1990 saw England's most iconic clash with an African nation when, having already beaten Egypt 1-0 in the group stages, Gary Lineker's brace saw them edge out a 3-2 quarterfinal thriller against Cameroon. |

Senegal survived a scare in their second game against hosts Qatar. After taking a two-goal lead, the hosts threatened to cause a shock by pulling one back on 78 minutes. But Senegal replied six minutes later to put the game to bed.
The Lions of Teranga were resilient in their final group game against Ecuador. They took the lead through an Ismaila Sarr penalty, but were pegged back by a Moises Caicedo goal. But as they did against Qatar, Senegal replied quickly, with a clinical volley from Kalidou Koulibaly winning the match and securing their last-16 place.
England's World Cup started in convincing fashion, with their 6-2 win over Iran gaining plenty of plaudits. A goalless draw followed against the USA, putting the brakes on the English excitement levels somewhat.
Another 45 minutes passed against Wales with England unable to find the net before two quick-fire goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden after the break turned the game in the Three Lions' favour.
Wales needed victory to keep their own World Cup dreams alive but Rashford netted his second and England were able to see the game out to book their spot in the knockout stages.
England vs Senegal Team News
Gareth Southgate changed up his midfield and forward line for match against Wales, with mixed results. While Jordan Henderson looked firmly off the pace, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden scored the goals. Southgate must decide whether to stick with three central midfielders or provide more pace up top.
Kyle Walker looked good at right-back after returning from injury, so could keep his place despite competition from Kieran Trippier and the unused Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Senegal have no fitness concerns ahead of the game.
What is Senegal’s World Cup record? This is only Senegal’s third World Cup. At their debut tournament in 2002, they famously upset holders France on the way to the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Turkey in extra-time. In 2018, they failed to make it out of the group stage, finishing behind Colombia and Japan. |
What is England's World Cup record?England have won the World Cup once in their history, in 1966. Four years ago under Southgate, the Three Lions reached the semi-finals in Russia where they lost to Croatia. |
