Southampton vs Chelsea Preview
The “win eluding” Southampton will be hosting the BLUES at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 20th Feb as the Premier League is heading to game week 25. Saints will be looking to host Chelsea after suffering a defeat at home against Wolves yesterday, according to Alley Sports.
As the saints are currently sitting on the 13th in the league table, the Saints will be looking to make a point or 3 this time at home. They will possibly be going out with a positive mentality as the reverse fixture ended all square at Stamford bridge as the scoreline was 3-3 back on 17th October 2020.
Chelsea to extend impressive run
Although Frank Lampard’s sacking may have seemed harsh at the time, the decision to bring in Thomas Tuchel has worked so far, with Chelsea unbeaten in his six games in charge, Telegraph.co.uk cites.
The 0-0 draw with Wolves in his first match may not have provided the fireworks supporters wanted, but five straight victories across all competitions have put the club firmly back in the top-four race.
Tuchel has undoubtedly focused on defense since arriving and the Blues have kept five clean sheets in the last six outings, with Monday’s shutout against Newcastle the third in a row at home.
Chelsea have won all three away assignments under the German, beating Tottenham and Sheffield United in the Premier League before seeing off Barnsley 1-0 in the FA Cup fifth round.
Southampton are on a downward spiral and the 2-1 home loss to Wolves was their sixth straight league defeat, leaving the south-coast outfit 13th in the table and 13 points behind Chelsea in fourth.
The Saints have struggled to break down stronger opposition in recent weeks, failing to score in defeats by Manchester United, Aston Villa and Leicester City, and look set for another disappointing time on Saturday.
Chelsea are unbeaten on their previous seven trips to St Mary’s, winning six and drawing one, with three of those victories coming to nil.

While Southampton are on a bad run of form, Hasenhuttl will be demanding performance from his side and there is every chance they can keep the scores level going into half-time on Saturday.
Having had less time to rest for this contest, Chelsea may start the clash at St Mary’s a little more slowly before coming good in the second half and clinching all three points.
The Blues’ squad has great strength in depth, considerably more than Southampton, and it is the use of the bench that could provide that extra something needed to get over the line.
Giroud can make presence count
Tammy Abraham hurt an ankle early in the 2-0 win over Newcastle in a challenge with Jamaal Lascelles and, after trying to run off the injury, was replaced by Olivier Giroud after 20 minutes.
The 34-year-old opened the scoring just 11 minutes later and he is likely to get the nod to face Southampton, a side he has scored against seven times in 12 Premier League appearances.
The Frenchman also scored against the Saints in the one FA Cup tie he has faced them in and there is every chance he can add to that impressive tally at the weekend.
With Chelsea playing with more confidence all over the pitch, there is sure to be plenty of service for Giroud and he represents good value in the any-time scorer market.

26 December 2019 – Chelsea 0-2 Southampton – Premier League
06 October 2019 – Southampton 1-4 Chelsea – Premier League
02 January 2019 – Chelsea 0-0 Southampton – Premier League
07 October 2018 – Southampton 0-3 Chelsea – Premier League
22 April 2018 – Chelsea 2-0 Southampton – FA Cup
Chelsea boast a solid record against the Saints, winning seven of their last nine games in the Premier League, though the last fixture between these two sides resulted in an away win for Southampton, as reported by Squawka.
That 2-0 defeat for Chelsea, courtesy of goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond came on Boxing Day last year, and Hasenhuttl will certainly be looking to that fixture for some inspiration as he returns to west London.
A Look At Southampton’s Betting Odds
Southampton have enjoyed FA Cup triumphs over Shrewsbury, Arsenal and Wolves in recent weeks, but their league position has plummeted, says Sports Bwin.
Saints were ahead at half-time during a quick rematch with Wanderers at this venue, with Danny Ings on target for the eighth time this term.
However, the game turned when Nelson Semedo’s shot cannoned off Ryan Bertrand’s arm and referee Graham Scott had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Ruben Neves converted the hotly-contested penalty and a transformed Wolves went on to win 2-1 thanks to Pedro Neto’s smart finish.
Ralph Hasenhuttl hit out at VAR for “destroying the game” after the handball ruling was allowed to stand.
He moaned: “The games aren’t decided in the stadium anymore, the games are decided at Stockley Park. This is not so good for the game, I don’t think.
“Everybody has seen it and there is only one opinion you can have about this situation.
“It is very hard to understand what has happened to us, it’s hard to take that we lost the match.”
Things are unlikely to get any easier for Saints here, with Chelsea having come out on top on each of their last five visits to St Mary’s.
Saints did grab consolation goals in three of those defeats, though, so 5/2 for an away win and both teams to score takes the eye from the Southampton vs Chelsea odds.
Last Southampton line-up: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Armstrong, Ings, Minamino.
A Look At Chelsea’s Betting Odds
Thomas Tuchel has had an immediate impact on Chelsea since replacing Frank Lampard and Monday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle saw them climb back up into the top four.
Timo Werner set up Olivier Giroud and then scored himself to help give us three winning bets on that game, including a 5/1 correct score pay-out.
The Blues were languishing in ninth position on the back of just two league victories from eight games when Lampard was sacked on January 25, but things look much brighter now.
Tuchel has implemented a 3-4-2-1 formation to great effect and Werner ending a 14-game top-flight goal drought against the Magpies was the icing on the cake.
“For strikers, the last percent of their confidence and of belief comes from goals and nothing else, but he worked really hard for that,” said Tuchel.
“He looked really decisive with assists and winning penalties in the last few games for us. And today he has an assist and a goal and this is super for him.
“I’m happy because he put in a lot of effort and hard work against the ball. Now it’s a big relief, but we saw it coming.”
An own goal from Antonio Rudiger against Sheffield United is the only blot on the copybook of Tuchel’s tightened defense, with five clean sheets kept in six league and cup games.
However, the Saints did well upfront against the Blues when drawing 3-3 at Stamford Bridge in October and have only failed to score in one of their last six home games.
With that in mind, we’re going with 15/2 for a 2-1 away win to finish off our Southampton vs Chelsea betting tips.
Last Chelsea line-up: Kepa, Rudiger, Alonso, Christensen, Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Abraham, Werner.
SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 Wolves – Danny Ings
CHELSEA 2-0 Newcastle – Olivier Giroud, Timo Werner
