Seeking to pick up successive wins in Serie A for the first time this season, Sampdoria take on Atalanta at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Wednesday.

The visitors head into the game without a win in each of their last two games and will be looking to end this dry spell.

Sampdoria returned to winning ways last time out as they claimed a 2-1 win over Spezia on home turf.

Prior to that, Roberto D'Aversa’s men were on a run of four games without a win, picking up one draw and losing three since a 3-0 win over Empoli on 19 September.

The result saw Sampdoria move clear of the relegation places as they currently occupy 15th place after picking up nine points from nine matches.

Meanwhile, Atalanta failed to bounce back from their Champions League defeat to Manchester United as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Udinese.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side head into Wednesday’s game winless in three of their most recent four games across all competitions, losing two and picking up one draw.

With 15 points from nine games, Atalanta are currently fifth on the log, level on points with Juventus and Florentina.

Sampdoria vs Atalanta Predictions

  • Atalanta have won each of their last three meetings with Sampdoria, scoring nine goals and conceding once.
  • Despite their disappointing 2021-22 season, Atalanta managed more away points (39) than all but Milan and Napoli in Serie A.
  • Sampdoria have won just two of their last nine competitive matches.

Frustrating window for Samp

The opening weekend of the Serie A season pits Sampdoria against Atalanta on Saturday, with the two sides harbouring very different aims for the new campaign; After a disappointing eighth-placed finish last term, hopes are high that Gian Piero Gasperini can bring the good times back to Bergamo, but for the hosts, survival is the name of the game.

Indeed, Sampdoria avoided the drop courtesy of others’ shortcomings last season, ending the campaign with two wins in their final eight games and being lucky not to join local rivals Genoa in Serie B. Brentford-bound Mikkel Damsgaard led an exodus of stars during the transfer window, and last week’s narrow cup win over weak Serie B opposition in Reggina promised little for a side in transition.

Atalanta hammered seven goals past Samp in the two clubs’ league meetings last term, and look primed to make a positive start to Gasperini’s seventh season in the job. Atalanta’s away form was excellent despite their woes last season; they picked up 39 points on the road, a tally only bettered by Milan and Napoli, while winning 12 of their 19 away league matches.

Given Sampdoria’s poor recent record against Atalanta and failure to improve their squad since Marco Giampaolo led them to 15th last season, backing the visitors for victory at a shade of odds-on looks prudent.

Meanwhile, eight of the last 11 competitive matches to feature the visitors contained goals at both ends, so an entertaining 3-1 win for Atalanta looks a decent correct score prediction.

Prediction: Sampdoria 1-3 Atalanta

Atalanta looking to improve upon last season

Sampdoria's main signing of the current transfer window so far is 34-year-old Francesco Caputo from Sassuolo which cost £3.15m. Abdelhamid Sabiri also joined the club for around £900k from Ascoli and Djuricic, Rincón, Metlika, Tantalocchi, Villar and Leverbe all came in on free transfers. However, Saturday's hosts saw Caprari join Verona for £4.50m, Bonazzoli went to Salernitana for £4.50m, and Morten Thorsby went to Union Berlin for £2.70m, while Yoshida and Ekdal both left the club on free transfers.

Jeremie Boga, Ederson and Merih Demiral were the big summer signings for Atalanta this season, each costing just under £20m. Ademola Lookman moved from RB Leipzig for £8.10m and will be looking to reignite his stagnating carer in Serie A. Atalanta have also made some money via player sales with Lovato leaving for £6.30m, Sutalo and Melegoni going for £3.60m each, Del Prato being sold for £3.15 and Reca joining Spezia for £1.80m. Guth and Kobacki have also left the club for nominal fees while Burgio, Alari, Scanagatta, Pedrini, Zanoni and Reda, all being released on free transfers.

Atalanta finished in a disappointing 8th position last season and will be looking to get the new Serie A campaign off to a positive start with an away win. Hosts Sampdoria finished three places and 6pts above the relegation zone last time out and will be hoping to push further into mid-table safety this season.

Atalanta to Win

Atalanta have won four of their last five league meetings with Sampdoria and we're backing the visitors to pick up another 3pts this weekend. Sampdoria have only spent around £4m on new players so far this summer and the squad really needs more investment if it is to push forward this season, while Atalanta have made three big signings each in the region of £20m and will be expected to challenge for the Champions League places.

Over 2.5 Goals

At least three goals have been scored in three of the last four meetings between these two clubs and in each of those games, Atalanta have scored over 2.5 team goals. Sampdoria's final two league games of last season both produced over 2.5 goals while three of Atalanta's last four matches have also witnessed three or more goals scored, including an emphatic 12-1 friendly win over Gambarogno-Contone.

Sampdoria vs Atalanta Head-To-Head

Sampdoria have a surprise lead in the history of this fixture, claiming 14 wins from their last 31 encounters. Atalanta have picked up 13 wins, while six games have ended in draws.
