Disney's first full trailer for the upcoming animated film Raya and the Last Dragon gives audiences a more in-depth look at the movie's heroine and her world. Much of the film was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it will be the second movie released on Disney+ with Premier Access, following Mulan.
Raya and the Last Dragon takes viewers into the fantasy world of Kumandra, a land where humans and dragons once peacefully co-existed, until the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity from an evil force. When the same evil force returns 500 years later, a young warrior named Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) sets out to find the last dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), and restore the land to its former glory.
Raya and The Last Dragon is scheduled to arrive on Disney Plus on Friday 5th March 2021.
The film will be available only as a Premier Access title at first, meaning subscribers will have to pay an additional fee of £19.99 in order to add it to their library.
If the family adventure follows the same strategy as 2020’s live-action Mulan remake, then it will become available to all Disney Plus subscribers at a later date this year, according to Radiotimes.
Is Raya and The Last Dragon getting a cinema release?
Raya and The Last Dragon is getting a simultaneous release on Disney Plus and in cinemas (where they are open).
At the moment, most cinemas across the United Kingdom are not open due to government restrictions and it’s quite possible that will still be the case by early March.
Therefore, watching Raya and The Last Dragon at home via Disney Plus Premier Access might well be the only option for fans based in the UK.
Cinemas are currently operating in some other countries, such as the United States, albeit at a reduced capacity.
What is Disney Plus Premier Access?
As explained in the Raya and the Last Dragon Super Bowl spot, the new Disney movie will premiere on Disney+ Premier Access. For a one-time fee of $29.99 (on top of the usual $6.99/month Disney+ subscription price), Disney+ subscribers can purchase access to Raya and the Last Dragon and stream it as many times as they’d like, Decider cited.
Where to watch RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON on Disney+ Premier Access
In order to purchase Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+ Premier Access, simply search for the film in the Disney+ app and click “Get Premier Access.” From there, enter your credit card information and payment details, submit, and get to streaming!
WHEN WILL RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON BE FREE ON DISNEY PLUS?
If you’re not willing to pay $29.99 for Raya and the Last Dragon, you’ll have to wait a bit to catch the film for free on Disney+. Disney has not yet announced when the animated film will be streaming for free on Disney+, but the Mulan release offers a few hints about Raya and the Last Dragon. Mulan first debuted on Premier Access on September 4 and hit Disney+ for free exactly three months later, on December 4.
With this pattern in mind, Raya and the Last Dragon will be available to stream for free on Disney+ on June 4, 2021.
Raya And The Last Dragon Cast And Characters
Raya and the Last Dragon boasts an all-star cast. Kelly Marie Tran, known for her role as Rose Tico in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, plays Raya, the film's lead: Raya is a princess and warrior who has trained to become a Guardian of the Dragon Gem. Awkwafina (The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians)voices Sisu, a water dragon and the last of her kind.
Other members of the cast include Gemma Chan as Raya's rival, Namaari; Sandra Oh as Virana, leader of the people of Fang and Namaari's mother; Daniel Dae Kim as Raya's father; Benedict Wong as Tong, a giant and one of Raya's companions; Izaac Wang as Boun, a child entrepreneur; Thalia Tran as Little Noi, a 'con-baby'; and Alan Tudyk as Raya's animal sidekick Tuk Tuk. The cast is full of talented actors, but many have pointed out that, while the movie is inspired by Southeast Asia, most of the voice cast is East Asian, raising questions of representation in animation, Screenrant reported.
Raya and The Last Dragon voice cast
Kelly Marie Tran has been cast in the lead role as Raya, a warrior princess who hopes to restore peace to her kingdom. Tran is best known to movie-goers for playing rebel ally Rose Tico in the most recent Star Wars trilogy.
She’ll be hoping to win the help of Sisu, the last dragon in existence, who will be voiced by comedian and actress Awkwafina. Fans will remember the rising star from her recent roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Jumanji: The Next Level and BBC iPlayer’s Nora From Queens.
Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) will play Raya’s father, Chief Benja, while Alan Tudyk (Rogue One) will voice her adorable pet Tuk Tuk, who resembles a giant armadillo.
Gemma Chan (Humans, Captain Marvel) lends her voice to Raya’s primary rival Namaari, whose mother Virana will be portrayed by Killing Eve star Sandra Oh.
Rounding out the supporting cast is Lucille Soong (Fresh Off The Boat), Patti Harrison (Shrill), Ross Butler (13 Reasons Why) and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) as a giant named Tong.
Raya And The Last Dragon Story Details
The story of Raya and the Last Dragon appears to unfold on two scales: there's is the fantastic battle between the dragons and the Druun, which requires Raya to find Sisu, but there is also the matter of reconciling the differences between the five lands of Kumandra. These plots will surely influence each other in order to deliver a wider message of trust and connection.
Based on the trailer, Raya trains under her father her whole life in order to find the last dragon. As an adult, she teams up with Tong, Boun, and Little Noi to find the last dragon and defeat the Druun, all while fighting with Namaari, who seeks the dragon for her own people. The trailer teases Disney's most action-focused animated film yet, complete with epic fights and gorgeous visuals. After the disappointment of 2020's Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon has the potential to be the next great film in the Disney princess canon.
Trust Vs. Distrust
One of the major themes of this movie, besides hope and teamwork, is trust versus distrust. Raya has a lot to overcome after the ultimate betrayal, and if she wants to save the world, she is going to have to place her trust in others.
These themes are heavily depicted in the look of the animation. From the lighting, to the angles. The team explained how they used these tools to create the feel of trust and distrust.
- eye level angles
- broad color palate
- shallow focus (bokah)
- water and steam creating a pleasant & calm feeling
- deep focus
- harsh world
- higher contrast
- stark shadows
- lower camera angles
- adding film grain
- arid look
A Look At The Creative Process
Another really cool part of this virtual press day for Raya and the Last Dragon is that we got a look at concept art, story boards, and visual effects. I personally love the behind the scenes stuff like this and getting to see how it all comes together.
If you look at the photo above, you will see the difference something as simple as adding steam to a scene will do for a film. Just incredible. It is things like this I would never notice when watching if it wasn’t for press days like this. Lighting plays a huge part as well, which you can tell by looking at the story boards, Mamasgeeky noted.
