Green Bay Packers Schedule in 2021 NFL: Key games

  • Week 12 vs. Rams: Now that Matthew Stafford is relocated, he's got a whole cast of better characters than he had for much of his time in Detroit. This feels like it could be a jacked-up version of the shootouts he and Rodgers may have had in the NFC North.
  • Week 16 vs. Browns: It's an out-of-conference clash, so it may not mean as much in the standings. But Cleveland has one of the most well-rounded rosters in the NFL. Beating the Browns won't be easy.
  • Week 9 at Chiefs: Apparently Rodgers wouldn't mind playing in the AFC West so he could go head to head with Patrick Mahomes. Um, OK, but that's easier said than done. Kansas City will be a tough out wherever, whenever.

Is Aaron Rodgers their QB when the season kicks off? That monumental question needs to be answered if we're looking to accurately project Green Bay's 2021 finish. Should Rodgers return, the Packers will rightfully remain the favorites in the NFC North, though a slight decline from two straight 13-3 seasons seems plausible. If, however, it's Jordan Love or someone else under center starting in Week 1, well, the Packers still have the division's top roster, but they could easily fall behind a team like the Vikings, if not even farther down the North standings.

Will Aaron Rodgers leave the Green Bay Packers? The latest news and rumors

Aaron Rodgers has had a Hall of Fame career with the Green Bay Packers, but it's possible that his time with one of the NFL's most storied franchises is coming to an end, ESPN reported.

Sources have told ESPN that Rodgers is so disgruntled with the organization that he's considering the unthinkable -- leaving Green Bay. Rodgers, 37, is still under contract with the Packers, so they'd have to agree to trade him, and by the looks of it they don't want to do that. Rodgers remains one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, with three MVP awards, nine Pro Bowl selections, and a Super Bowl title and MVP award under his belt. He'd instantly make any NFL team a contender, but his price would be steep, and that's assuming he doesn't come to some kind of understanding with the Packers in the meantime -- or decide to retire and perhaps pursue hosting "Jeopardy!" full time.

It's an evolving situation and anything could happen, so here's the latest news and rumors on this potentially league-altering story from our NFL reporters and experts.

Green Bay Packers Schedule in 2021 NFL: Predictions

For now, let's assume the Green Bay Packers, who have paid Aaron Rodgers $242.3 million over the past 16 seasons, and their quarterback are going to find a way to play nice.

The NFL seems on board with that assumption. The Packers are scheduled for five primetime games with another on Christmas Day against the Browns. Otherwise, that's a lot of Jordan Love on national television.

As long as Rodgers is at the helm, the Packers are one of the best teams in the NFC. To wit, they've amassed a 126-63-1 record with Rodgers as their starter.

You can say they should have added a receiver. It would have probably helped assuage their star quarterback, but they were still the No. 1 offense in the NFL last season with Davante Adams and their collection of supposed misfit pass-catchers.

Three things to know about Green Bay’s schedule

Toughest Stretch of the Packers’ Schedule

Green Bay is the only team to play 10 games against teams that reached the postseason last year. By 2020 winning percentage, its 2021 slate of games is the fourth-most difficult in the NFL.

The toughest stretch begins in Week 8, with a short week and a long flight to Arizona for a Thursday night game. Then, it’s a Week 9 clash against the powerhouse Chiefs. In Week 10, the Packers will host the Seahawks, who are coming off a bye. In Week 11, it’s a trip to Minnesota to face the Vikings at raucous U.S. Bank Stadium. Finally, it’s a home game against the Rams, who also will be coming off a bye.

Easiest Stretch of the Packers’ Schedule

If Aaron Rodgers returns to the lineup, the Packers have a chance to start fast – critical considering the overall difficulty of the schedule. The opener at New Orleans won’t be the same without Drew Brees. In Week 2, it’s a home game against the rebuilding Lions. The Week 3 game at San Francisco – on a short week, no less – will be a huge challenge.

After that, it’s home against the Pittsburgh Steelers, at the Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears, and at home against the Washington Football Team. Of those four games, only Pittsburgh had a winning record in 2020.

Whoever the Quarterback, Green Bay Will Be Tested

The Packers led the NFL in scoring last season. Whether it’s Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles or Drew Lock, Green Bay will be tested to match that level of productivity in 2021. The Packers will play six games against top-10 scoring defenses, including the Rams (first), Ravens (second), Steelers (third) and Washington (fourth).

It's hard to say Green Bay will have as much success as it did in 2020, though. It didn't really do anything of note in free agency outside of retaining Aaron Jones, which made last year's selection of A.J. Dillon even more confusing.

The best thing you can say about the Packers offseason is they didn't really lose much from the team that went 13-3 last season. Center Corey Linsley was the biggest loss and the Packers directly addressed it in the draft with the selection of Josh Myers.
