While some may be disappointed to see Knives Out 2 and 3 go to Netflix, instead of the traditional theatrical model, it might ultimately be for the best.

Knives Out Series

Launched in 2019, the first Knives out It proved to be a delightfully old-school police novel, thrilling audiences with its star-studded cast and intriguing Agatha Christie-style murder mystery plot. The mischief begins when renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead on his estate just after his 85th birthday, leading to the inquisitive and elegant detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) being recruited to investigate.

From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc examines a web of red herrings and selfish lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. The film features an enormously talented cast that any sequel will undoubtedly struggle to overcome, including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell. and Christopher Plummer.

Since the success of the first film, audiences were quick to ask for a sequel, and writer / director Rian Johnson confirmed earlier this year that Knives Out 2 is happening, but perhaps not as expected. While not much is known about the details of the sequel yet, Johnson has stated that it is best not to think of the film as Knives out 2but rather the continuing adventures of Daniel Craig’s world-famous private detective, Benoit Blanc.

“It sucked, because I sat on the first idea for 10 years. And with this one, I’m starting with a blank page,” Johnson said of his approach to follow-up. “It’s not really a sequel to Knives Out. I need to come up with a title so I can stop calling it The Knives Out Sequel because it’s Daniel Craig as the same detective with a whole new cast.”

Sequels Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 Filming Time

Variety is reporting that Netflix has closed a deal to release Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, paying $450 million for Johnson's upcoming whodunnits. Additionally, both Johnson and Craig are set to return for the two sequels. Aside from Craig, it's unclear who may star in Knives Out 2 or Knives Out 3, but filming is expected to begin on the first sequel this summer.

Filming of the long-awaited sequel to director Rian Johnson’s crime novel, Knives out 2, will start in the next few months. Production is reportedly considering a June 28 start date, and filming is scheduled to begin filming in Greece. This news comes after the recent announcement that the popular streaming service Netflix is set to acquire not only Knives out 2 but also Knives out 3.

Sequels Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 Cast

Netflix just dropped a whole lot of cash to ensure Knives Out 2 and 3 have "Netflix Original" stamped on them.

Rian Johnson will return to direct and Daniel Craig will be back as the charming Benoit Blanc. The filmmaker is reportedly searching for new cast members imminently, with Knives Out 2 going into production this June.

Johnson has already revealed that, besides Craig, he wants to tell a new story with new characters. "It’s been such a mindfuck, because I sat on the idea for the first one for 10 years. And with this one, I’m starting with a blank page," Johnson told Interview magazine.

"It’s not really a Knives Out sequel. I need to come up with a title for it so I can stop calling it The Knives Out Sequel because it’s just Daniel Craig as the same detective with a totally new cast."

Johnson is certainly keeping busy at the moment. The Last Jedi director is still working on a Star Wars trilogy and he's creating a new mystery series, titled Poker Face, for Peacock. That will star Russian Doll's Natasha Lyonn, according to gamesradar.

“I’m very excited to dig into the type of fun, character driven, case-of-the-week mystery goodness I grew up watching," Johnson said in a statement about Poker Face. "It’s my happy place. Having Natasha as a partner in crime is a dream, and we’ve found the perfect home at Peacock."

Sequels Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 Plot

Plot details aren’t available at this moment, and it looks like the only cast member returning from the star-studded original is Daniel Craig as private detective Benoit Blanc. That makes sense – Blanc is meant to be a Poirot-like character who goes from mystery to mystery, so while it would be nice to see Ana de Armas back again, I understand why she’s unlikely to return. The fact that the film is shooting in Greece suggests that Blanc will end up investigating a mystery overseas, but that’s just speculation on my part. “This’ll be another Poirot novel,” Johnson said of the potential sequel in the past. “This’ll be just like what Agatha Christie did. It’s disconnected from Knives Out. It’s just another case.”

In the original film, Blanc was investigating the death of a famed mystery novelist. The eccentric members of the dead novelist’s family were all suspects, as was his nurse, played by de Armas. It was a funny, twisty, wildly entertaining movie, and I’m excited to see what Johnson does with the material now. It’s all but certain that Johnson will assemble a new star-studded cast for Blanc to investigate. And the fact that there’s already a third film in consideration indicates we’re getting a full-blown Benoit Blanc Netflix franchise, and I for one am here for it.
