Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday hoping to stop a run of home defeats against a Citizens side that have their eyes on a 10th straight Premier League victory.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been in irresistible form over the past couple of months and look like they’re back to their best, whereas Liverpool’s inconsistencies – three wins, three draws and three defeats in their last nine league matches – have seriously dented their hopes of retaining the title.

A win for City would take them 10 points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand, although it’s 18 years since they last won a match at Anfield.

Liverpool suffered a second straight 1-0 defeat in their own backyard against a team sat in the bottom half of the Premier League table in midweek. Brighton defended well and secured all 3pts courtesy of a solitary strike 11-minutes into the second half from English-born Colombian forward Steven Alzate. Liverpool's new signing, Ben Davies was on the bench for Klopp's side but didn't come on to make his debut, instead the german went with a center-back partnership of Henderson and Phillips.

An early goal from Gabriel Jesus handed Man City the lead at Turf Moor on Wednesday night and another goal before the break from Raheem Sterling effectively wrapped up all 3pots for the visitors. Cty controlled this game from start to finish and now top the table by 3pts and still have a game in hand over Liverpool and the rest of their contenders for the title.

Liverpool still dominates the head-to-head record between these two clubs with 80 wins, 43 draws and 46 defeats from the duo's last 169 encounters. However, Man City have had the better of their Merseyside rivals in recent seasons, winning three, drawing two and only losing one of the pair's last six matches. Back in November, there two teams played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad and both teams have scored in five of the duo's last seven competitive and non-competitive clashes, according to Football Whispers.

It has been a helter-skelter start to the Premier League season, with habitual winners Man City and Liverpool sticking to this chaotic narrative and suffering shock defeats along the way, says Squawka.

Pep Guardiola bolstered his backline once again in the summer window but could not find the answers to prevent Leicester from scoring five at the Etihad in September. They have since responded with wins over Arsenal and Sheffield United but endured back-to-back draws with Leeds and West Ham.

That has the north-west club down in tenth, but with a game in hand, while Jurgen Klopp’s side has put that 7-2 reversal at the hands of Aston Villa behind them, winning two and drawing in the Merseyside derby to climb back up the table.

The reigning champions currently find themselves in the first position, but if City wins this blockbuster bout and their game in hand, then they will leapfrog the Reds. It’s all to play for in a mouthwatering contest between this season’s two favorites for the title.

A Look At Liverpool’s Betting Odds

First, let’s get Liverpool’s miserable run of results on Merseyside out of the way because that does not make good reading, Sports Bwin cites.

Frustrating draws with West Brom and Manchester United have been followed by 1-0 losses to Burnley and Brighton, blowing away the aura of fortress Anfield.

A proud record that saw the Reds go unbeaten for almost four years at this venue in the league is in tatters, but all is not lost.

Recent away wins at Tottenham and West Ham showed some spark still remains in Jurgen Klopp’s side, with six goals scored in those games.

Defender Andy Robertson declared: “We need to get our form back, we need to get back to the Liverpool that everyone knows.

“We need to put in performances on a consistent basis, it’s no good doing it one or two games in a row and then having a slip.

“That’s the only way you get Champions League football, that’s the only way you get trophies. That’s what we need to get back to, starting Sunday.

“It’s a big game, they’re flying and playing really well just now, but we don’t turn into a bad team overnight and we’ll be ready come Sunday.”

Constant readjustments to patch up an injury-ravaged defense haven’t helped, but the arrival of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak should help Klopp to get key midfielders back in their best positions.

Alisson, Fabinho and Sadio Mane could return after missing the midweek debacle and we’re hoping Sunday’s line-up and formation has a far more familiar feel.

Looking at the Liverpool vs Man City odds, we like 4/1 for a home win and both teams to score.

Last Liverpool line-up: Kelleher, Robertson, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Milner, Henderson, Shaqiri, Firmino, Salah.

A Look At Manchester City’s Betting Odds

Following a shaky start to the campaign, City has put together a long winning streak which has seen them storm to the top of the table and close in on more cup silverware.

Getting things right at the back has been the key to their current hot streak, which continued with a 2-0 triumph over Burnley at Turf Moor.

That was a 16th clean sheet in 20 outings since they last tasted defeat at Tottenham back in November.

Reflecting on how the Blues have turned things around in such a clinical fashion, Raheem Sterling said: “It’s togetherness.

“You see how difficult it’s been for not just us, but everyone. It’s about grinding results out and that’s what we’ve been doing.

“The more you win, the better you feel and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve been on a good run and we need to continue that now.”

However, it has to be taken into consideration that City have benefited from a favorable schedule.

Nine straight league victories have featured just two wins over opponents in the top half of the table, including ninth-placed Aston Villa.

This clash kicks off a much tougher run of fixtures and Pep Guardiola is still without key playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

This may just be a shock to the system and we’re going for a 2-1 home win at 11/1 to finish off our Liverpool vs Man City betting tips.

Last City line-up: Ederson, Dias, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo, Gundogan, Rodri, Silva, Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez.
