Inter Milan return to Serie A action this weekend as they take on newly promoted Lecce on Saturday evening.

The Nerazzurri pushed city rivals AC Milan all the way in the Scudetto fight last season, but a costly 2-1 defeat against Bologna put Simone Inzaghi's men on the back foot heading into the final run-in.

Another nail-biting title battle is on the cards in 2022/23.

Although it was a story of so near but so far in the defence of their title last term, Inter still enjoyed a fruitful season following the departure of coach Antonio Conte and some key players from the Scudetto-winning side.

While Simone Inzaghi's squad lost control of the Serie A summit in February and ultimately ceded the title to city rivals Milan, the former Lazio manager's first season brought triumphs in both the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia - on each occasion getting the better of bitter foes Juventus to lift the trophy.

Over the summer, Inter moved quickly to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club, following the failure of his time at Chelsea, and the Belgian striker now rekindles a potent partnership with Lautaro Martinez. So far, too, defensive mainstay Milan Skriniar has been retained despite strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Inzaghi's quiet revolution seems set to gather pace, but Inter's pre-season form has been inconsistent before the competitive action begins this weekend.

Finishing with a loss to La Liga outfit Villarreal, the Nerazzurri won only once from five warm-up games; conceding 10 times in the process.

Nevertheless, Inter have won each of their last three opening-round fixtures in Serie A, and are unbeaten in 11 against newly-promoted sides - including in August 2019, when they beat Lecce 4-0 in Conte's first game in charge.

By contrast with their illustrious visitors, Lecce are currently the club to have played the most matches on the opening day without posting a single win: 16 in all, while losing each of their last five.

The southern side are back in the big time after winning a highly-competitive title race in Serie B, which earned them promotion to Italy's top tier for the 10th time in their history.

After the Giallorossi suffered relegation on the final of day of the 2019-20 campaign by losing at home to Parma, at the second attempt they have returned to the promised land.

Led by experienced coach Marco Baroni, whose only previous spell in Serie A was a brief one - lasting just a few months with Carpi in 2017 - Lecce are undoubtedly among the favourites for relegation, despite a reputation for playing entertaining football.

The portents are not good for the side from Puglia - on the 'heel' of the Italian peninsula's boot - as they ended their pre-season programme with a defeat to Parma before crashing out of the Coppa Italia to Cittadella last weekend.

Lecce, though, have a small slice of history on their side when they welcome one of Calcio's heavyweights to Via del Mare on Saturday evening, as they have gone unbeaten in their last three home meetings with Inter - against no other side do the Nerazzurri have a longer winless away run in Serie A.

Simone Inzaghi has been gradually reshaping his Inter squad over the summer break, bringing in established stars such as Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, plus some younger blood - Kristjan Asllani, Raoul Bellanova and goalkeeper Andre Onana.

While the latter, who arrived from Ajax on a free transfer, is already 26, he provides much-needed competition for captain Samir Handanovic, now 38. The Slovenian stopper is set to retain his place for Saturday's opener at least.

Ivan Perisic, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez are among those to have departed, and Perisic's switch to Spurs should see Federico Dimarco lineup on the left flank of the visitors' 3-5-2 formation, though Matteo Darmian is another alternative.

Up front, Lautaro Martinez will be joined by Lukaku, who scored his first Serie A goals against Lecce on his debut in August 2019. The former Manchester United striker still owns the league's best goals-per-minute ratio of current players - netting on average every 125 minutes, better even than Ciro Immobile (127) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (140).

Meanwhile, Lecce have lost their main marksman Massimo Coda to Genoa during the transfer window, and Serie B's top scorer of the last two seasons should be replaced by Federico Di Francesco in the hosts' forward line.

The latter was one of several signings over recent weeks, including another forward option in Lorenzo Colombo - on loan from Milan - and Sampdoria pair Kristoffer Askildsen and Wladimiro Falcone.

Falcone replaces previous first-choice goalkeeper Gabriel, but the shape of the side in front of him remains to be seen, as Marco Baroni may decide to adapt his preferred 4-3-3 setup to tackle one of Italy's giants.

Lecce possible starting lineup:

Falcone; Gendrey, Blin, Dermaku, Gallo; Bistrovic, Hjulmand, Askildsen; Ceesay, Strefezza; Di Francesco

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:

Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Dimarco; Martinez, Lukaku

Lecce vs Inter Milan: Head-to-Head

After finishing the 2021/22 Serie B season with an "unprecedented" record of losing only 5/38 rounds, Lecce players have proudly won a direct promotion to play in Serie A this year. as the championship team. However, in order to prepare for their first highest Italian league, coach Marco Baroni's teachers and students were not ready in fact.

Specifically, I Giallorossi only played 3 friendly matches but lost 2 of them. And yet, they have just been eliminated by the opponent under Cittadella from the Coppa Italia 2022/23 with a score of 2-3 after 120 minutes of play. Therefore, everything in front of Lecce can be viewed as very skewed.

Inter Milan, for their part, failed to succeed in their goal of defending the Scudetto title, after letting AC Milan usurp the throne last season. After 38 matches, coach Simone Inzaghi's army finished in 2nd place with 2 points worse than the opponent in the same city. In particular, they and AC Milan are the 2 clubs that have lost at least the season with the same 4 matches, the difference is because Inter Milan is more than AC Milan exactly 1 draw.

Lecce vs Inter Milan Predictions

  • Eight of the last 10 competitive matches played by Inter saw the Nerazzurri win by more than one goal.
  • Inter Milan’s return of 84 goals gave them Serie A’s best attacking record last season, and they have since brought Romelu Lukaku back to San Siro.
  • Lecce have lost several key players since winning Serie B last season.

Nerazzurri begin as title favourites

While Inter Milan narrowly missed out on consecutive Serie A triumphs as Milan snatched the Scudetto last season, Simone Inzaghi’s side begin 2022-23 as title favourites after bolstering an already strong squad with the acquisitions of Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, among others, and a trip to Lecce seems to present them with the ideal chance to lay down a marker.

Indeed, Inter already had Serie A’s best attack after plundering 84 goals last term, and the return of Lukaku, who scored 64 times in 95 appearances in his last spell, is an ominous sign for their competitors. Inzaghi implemented a more proactive, dominant style last term, and despite missing out on the title, Inter ended last season by winning eight of their final 10 matches by more than one goal.

Lecce suffered a heartbreaking final-day relegation when they last played at this level, but won plenty of admirers in storming to the Serie B title under Marco Baroni last term. While they have added 10 new players since then, Lecce have also lost their top scorer Massimo Coda and first-choice goalkeeper Gabriel, among others, and look set for a long season.

Lukaku can fire Inter to dominant start

With Inter making a habit of swatting aside inferior opponents last season, winning each of their last six Serie A games against bottom-half sides whilst plundering 20 goals, we’re confidently tipping them to beat a -1 handicap on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a 3-0 away win could offer decent correct score value, while Lukaku – who hit 30 goals in each of his two seasons with Inter last time around (in all competitions) – is always a strong anytime goalscorer pick.

Lecce vs. Inter Latest Odds

Check Asian odds: In fact, Lecce has never been an opponent of Inter Milan when only winning 2/16 confrontations, besides 3 draws and 11 losses. However, they made it difficult for the visitors in terms of investment with 8/14 winning bets recorded. However, having the last 8/9 losing bets is making Lecce not a good destination. Not to mention, Inter Milan is very bright with 4/7 wins as a guest recently.

Check the odds of Over and under: The certainty seems to be the basis for Lecce's success when they have witnessed the last 9/12 matches with no more than 2 goals scored. Meanwhile, Inter Milan are in dire need of rebuilding their defense after conceding all five friendlies ahead of the season. Besides, Lecce's last 3 receptions to Inter Milan have minimal results, so the scenario of many upcoming goals is not very promising.

1 – Inter to win – 4/13

2 – Inter over 1.5 total goals – 4/11

3 – Total goals scored over 2.5 – 6/10

4 – Both teams to score – 21/20

5 – Inter to win 3-1 – 11/1

Inter’s frustration at not retaining the Serie A title in 2022 will form a major motivation for them this season.

Simone Inzaghi’s side dropped off top spot at the start of February, and Milan simply picked up the momentum from there, as the holders were unable to wrestle back control in the final weeks of the campaign.

Inter’s reaction has been to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club, following his key role in their title win in 2021, but their preseason form has been mixed.

Two wins and two draws, plus a defeat to La Liga giants Villarreal, have not boosted early season optimism to a significant degree but they will be confident of a positive result against their promoted hosts.

Lecce picked up two wins from four in preseason with Marco Baroni’s side already knocked out of the Coppa Italia after defeat to Serie B side AS Cittadella last weekend.

Inter’s slight edge in preseason, and their talented squad, make them favourites to win in Stadio Via del Mare, and get the campaign off to a strong start.

Inzaghi is confident his side can score goals on the opening weekend, after netting 10 goals in five preseason games, but they failed to keep a clean sheet in each of those matches.

That defensive fragility will open the door for Lecce to at least threaten, after they scored in three of their own four warm up matches, plus two in the home defeat to AS Cittadella.

Inter should have little issue in racking up goals on the opening weekend, but their defence needs to improve, if Inzaghi is serious about mounting a title challenge in 2023.

Both Teams to Score

Both teams have scored in three of the last six league meetings between these two clubs and on each of those occasions, Lecce had the home advantage. Two of Lecce's last four fixtures have produced goals at both ends of the pitch, including their 3-2 home defeat in the Coppa Italia last week. Four of Inter Milan's last five matches have seen both teams score so while the visitors look supreme going forward, they often leave themselves vulnerable at the back.

Lukaku to Score First

Romelu Lukaku has rejoined Inter Milan on loan from Chelsea this season and the Belgian star has plenty to prove after a frustrating year away in England. Before he left Italy, Lukaku bagged 64-goals in 95 league games for Inter Milan and was easily the best striker in the division. Now he's back and looking to make up for lost time, which is why we're backing Lukaku to score the first goal of this game.
