Israel - Gaza Conflict Latest News update: An Israeli airstrike has destroyed a high-rise building that housed The Associated Press offices in the Gaza Strip.
The airstrike Saturday came roughly an hour after the Israeli military ordered people to evacuate the building. There was no immediate explanation for why the building was targeted.
The building houses The Associated Press, Al Jazeera and a number of offices and apartments. The strike on the building housing media offices came in the afternoon, after the owner received a call from the Israeli military warning that the building would be hit. AP’s staff and others in the building evacuated immediately, and were reported safe.
The Israeli military said the building that was hit also contained “military assets” belonging to Hamas intelligence.
Al-Jazeera, the news network funded by Qatar’s government, broadcast the airstrikes live as the building collapsed.
According AP, A furious Israeli barrage early Friday killed a family of six in their house and sent thousands fleeing to U.N.-run shelters. The military said the operation involved 160 warplanes dropping some 80 tons of explosives over the course of 40 minutes and succeeded in destroying a vast tunnel network used by Hamas.
The development comes hours after an Israeli air strike in Gaza city on Saturday killed at least 10 Palestinians, a majority of whom were children, AP reported. The earlier Israeli airstrike on the Gaza City refugee camp was the deadliest single strike of the current conflict between Israel and the militant group Hamas.
After the office building was targeted, Hamas’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said that Tel Aviv and central Israel should “wait for our shocking response.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted that the Biden administration “communicated directly to the Israelis” after the strike on the media tower in Gaza City, Washington Poste report.
Israel - Hamas conflict
As the conflict between Israel and the Hamas continues to escalate, Palestine witnessed some of its most widespread protests in years.
Since Monday night, Hamas has fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, which has pounded the Gaza Strip with strikes. In Gaza, at least 139 people have been killed, including 39 children and 22 women; in Israel, eight people have been killed, including the death Saturday of a man killed by a rocket that hit in Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv.
Hamas has fired some 2,000 rockets toward Israel since Monday, according to the Israeli military. Most have been intercepted by anti-missile defenses, but they have brought life to a standstill in southern Israeli cities, caused disruptions at airports and have set off air raid sirens in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Hamas will “pay a very heavy price” for its rocket attacks as Israel has massed troops at the frontier.

Pro-Palestinian protests across the world
Thousands of people took to the streets of cities across the world Saturday, to show their support for Palestinians, as airstrikes pounded Gaza and rocket attacks hit Israel for a sixth consecutive day, NBC News report.
Palestinians across the world mark the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe" each year on May 15 to mark their displacement in the 1948 war around Israel's creation. The violence showed little sign of abating Saturday as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 10 people and rocket attacks from Gaza killed a man in Israel.
In France, thousands were in Paris in support of the Palestinians, despite the Ministry of Interior deeming the planned protest illegal Friday over fears of violence.
Protesters in the Australian city of Sydney also chanted "free, free Palestine" after gathering outside the Town Hall on Saturday. Hundreds of people also took to the streets of Melbourne.
In London, where several thousand people took to the streets.
