#ChildFreeDay: Meaning

There are people who are happy in life without having children. Not every person in the world needs to be a parent. There is a lot of work to be done and people to speak up for. International Childfree Day honors people who have found their life's work and purpose in things other than having kids.

International Childfree Day is held every year on August 1 to understand and support couples who have chosen not to have children. It began in 1973 with the help of the National Alliance for Optional Parenthood. The group was started in California in 1972 to spread the idea that people can choose not to have children and make it seem normal to do so. Laura Carroll brought back the celebration of the day in 2013 because couples all over the world still face criticism, rejection, and sometimes outright anger from other people when they choose not to have children.

#ChildFreeDay: Celebrations

There are many ways for people to celebrate International Childfree Day. Use some of these ideas to plan a fun day that shows respect and honor for people who don't have children:

Honor your friends who don't have kids by telling them to keep living the life they choose. Today, honor them by going to a party in your area.

To keep things simple, send a card to your friend(s) who don't have kids and tell them how much you admire them! Help your childfree family and friends by posting about their successes on social media with the hashtag #ChildFreeDay.

#ChildFreeDay: History

International Childfree Day has its roots in an event held in the early 1970s by the National Organization for Non-Parents (N.O.N.). At the time, the group chose a male and female non-parent of the year and had them walk down New York City's Fifth Avenue. That's when International Childfree Day, which used to be called Non-Parents Day, was created to honor people who choose not to have children and help others understand that choice.

Laura Carroll, an author who cares a lot about reproductive rights, ethics, and the childfree choice, brought this event back to life in 2013. Laura Carroll gave Childfree Media, Ltd. the reins of the event after ten years of running it.

International Childfree Day is still celebrated every year. The goal is to support people who choose not to have children and make life without kids seem normal. And people who don't want children can celebrate! People who do have children can still find a friend who doesn't want children and let them know that their choice is supported and respected.
