5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

The ongoing rain/snow in Arunachal Pradesh is expected to continue, with an increase both in intensity and extent likely by Saturday, before tapering off from Sunday. About 40-90 mm of rain is possible across the eastern half of the state from Thursday to Saturday. Thunderstorms are on the cards on Saturday. After a brief respite on Friday, a fresh western disturbance, which is expected to be more substantial than the previous system, will start to affect the Western Himalayan Region from Saturday. The peak will fall on Sunday, with 25-75 cm of fresh snow accumulation likely across the northern parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand a day, along with thunderstorms.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the disturbance will cause fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall over the Western Himalayan Region on March 6-7, along with isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on March 6-7 and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on March 7. Further, the system will also affect the adjoining northwestern plains, producing isolated light rain/drizzle over Punjab on March 6 and 7, and over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on March 7. Thunderstorms with lightning and hail are also possible at isolated places over Punjab, north Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh on March 7.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures will be 4 to 8°C higher than normal across much of Rajasthan during this forecast period. Below-average maximums are expected across the Brahmaputra Plains. On the other hand, overnight minimums have been forecast to be warmer than normal across much of the country during this period, with the exception of the Deccan Plateau, where temperatures will remain normal or slightly cooler until Sunday.

Rain forecast for March 5 - 7

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance (WD) is set to affect the weather across the WHR from Friday night, and the adjoining plains of Northwest India from Saturday night. Under the influence of this system, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall are very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Saturday and Sunday. The snowfall will be focused on the higher reaches of these regions.

As per The Weather Channel’s met team, the peak of the precipitation will fall on Sunday, with 25-75 cm of fresh snow accumulation expected across the northern parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on the day. Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall is on the cards over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on both Saturday and Sunday, but over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Sunday alone. These states and territories could also witness thunderstorms, lightning, and hail over the weekend.

As for the neighboring plain region, isolated light rains and drizzles have been forecast over Punjab on Saturday-Sunday, and over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Moreover, isolated areas within Punjab, northern Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh may also get lashed by thunderstorms, lightning, and hail this weekend.

In view of these predictions, the IMD’s regional met center in New Delhi has issued an orange alert over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Saturday. Come Sunday, these regions will retain the alert, but it will also extend to the neighboring states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The orange alert urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions. Further, a yellow watch has been placed over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Saturday, and it will cover the likes of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. This watch advises the residents to be aware of the local weather situation. This wet weather is sure to have a cooling effect over the region, with temperatures expected to fall by 3-4°C on Sunday, March 7 due to the rain/snow impact. Therefore, the maximum temperatures over most parts of the plain region will remain between 28-33°C.

Overall, these wet and cool conditions should offer good, albeit temporary comfort to the North Indians, especially considering a sweltering summer will soon arrive and stay for the next three months. The IMD’s long-term forecast has indicated that the maximum temperatures will be higher than normal across North and Northwest India. Mercury levels could be 0.71°C higher than normal in the northwest—particularly across Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, with warmer nights also on the horizon.
