2 Days rain & snow forecast
With heavy precipitation likely to come Jammu & Kashmir’s way over the next 48 hours, the Srinagar-Leh highway will be reopened for traffic only after the forecasted conditions subside—on Sunday, February 28. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an ongoing western disturbance is expected to bring widespread rainfall/snowfall and isolated thunderstorms over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad over the next three days. Furthermore, the aforementioned territories will also experience isolated hailstorms on Thursday, and isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall conditions on Thursday and Friday. In view of this forecast, the IMD has issued an orange alert over Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh on Thursday, with the advisory urging its residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions.
And as part of these precautionary measures, the Srinagar-Leh highway will remain closed until this system subsides, and reopen for the public directly on February 28, as per the border roads organization (BRO). Ahead of the scheduled opening, heavy machinery and daredevil workforce are likely to be deployed to clear-out the road and make it safe for traffic passage. Post reopening, several advisories will also be issued in view of the slippery road conditions and avalanche warnings, including allowing the plying of vehicles with chains for both HMVs and LMVs and one-way traffic at Zojila pass to avoid accidents.
Moreover, the divisional commissioner has directed the BRO to provide logistic support to BSNL and Reliance Jio networks to resume cellular connectivity, in order to ensure mobile connectivity for travelers along the highway in case of emergencies. He has also directed the Chief Engineer of BRO to provide accommodation, food, petrol, and other kinds of assistance to the travelers during emergencies along the highway. If the BRO is able to stick to this schedule, it will achieve a feat never done before by opening the highway at the earliest point of the year. Otherwise, each year, this treacherous highway that passes through the Zojila Pass is only thrown open for traffic by the end of April or the beginning of May.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh have continued to maintain an upward trend, as evident from the buds that are starting to sprout on trees in the Valley. During the early hours of Thursday, Srinagar recorded 7.4°C, Pahalgam 3.2°C, and Gulmarg -0.6°C as their minimum temperatures. Further, Leh town of Ladakh had -3.8°C, Kargil -2.5°C, and Drass -2.8°C as the night's lowest mercury levels. Lastly, Jammu city recorded 16.3°C, Katra 16.2°C, Batote 7.5°C, Banihal 7.2°C, and Bhaderwah 6.6°C as their respective minimum temperatures.
