5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast
A series of western disturbances are expected to impact the Western Himalayan region this week. Therefore, parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh are likely to experience widespread snow or rain, along with thunderstorms and hail. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fairly widespread to widespread rainfall or snowfall is possible over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad during the next five days. In addition, isolated to scattered rainfall or snowfall is possible over Himachal Pradesh for the next two days, while scattered to fairly widespread may occur for subsequent 3 days. Parts of Uttarakhand are also likely to witness similar weather conditions of isolated to scattered rainfall or snowfall for the next 5 days.
Furthermore, isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on February 25 and over Himachal Pradesh on February 26. The heaviest snowfall is expected from late Thursday for the next 48 hours with snow totals in excess of 120 cm over the west part of Jammu & Kashmir. Moreover, intermittent isolated snow or rain is expected over the Himalayan region for the next few days due to the impact of cyclonic circulation. Meanwhile, a trough is present over the west of Kerala, which is likely to bring spells of rain in some areas of the Malabar coast and Tamil Nadu for the next couple of days. Warmer trends are forecast across many parts of India until early March at least. Temperatures may exceed the mark of 40°C in some pockets of Konkan & Goa from Saturday.

Rain forecast from February 24 onwards
Parts of North India, particularly the Western Himalayan region, are set to experience a spike in rainfall and snowfall activity this week starting Wednesday, February 24. In view of the harsh conditions that are on the horizon, multiple orange alerts have been issued over Jammu-Kashmir and Uttarakhand later this week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance will begin influencing the weather across the northernmost parts of India from Wednesday onwards.
The system will bring fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from Wednesday to Sunday, and isolated to scattered rain/snow over Uttarakhand over the next five days. As for Himachal Pradesh, isolated to scattered rain/snow conditions are on the cards for the next two days, followed by fairly widespread rain/snow for the subsequent three days. Moreover, isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall is particularly likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from Thursday to Saturday, and over Himachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday. The heaviest rainfall/snowfall activity is likely to occur on Friday, with snow totals in excess of 80 cm/day expected over the western part of Jammu & Kashmir, as per The Weather Channel’s met team.
Apart from the precipitation, isolated thunderstorms and lightning are also in the forecast over all the aforementioned locations for the rest of the week. Furthermore, isolated hailstorms may hit Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Wednesday and Thursday, Himachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday, and Uttarakhand between Tuesday and Saturday. In view of these predictions, the IMD’s regional met center in New Delhi has issued an orange alert over Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh on Thursday, and over Himachal Pradesh on Friday due to the strong likelihood of heavy rain/snow. The advisory instructs residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough weather. Multiple yellow watches have also been placed over the states and territories in this period—J&K, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand on Feb 26-27 and Himachal Pradesh on Feb 24, 25, and 2. The watch advises people to be aware of their local weather situation.
This fresh spell could very well bring some balance to the precipitation figures across the Western Himalayan region, which has experienced below-average rain and snow since the beginning of 2021. Between January 1 and February 22, Jammu-Kashmir has recorded 97 mm precipitation—a 70% ‘deficit’ compared to its long-term average for this period. Similarly, Ladakh registered 4.8 mm (79% deficit), Himachal Pradesh 52.3 mm (69% deficit), and Uttarakhand 40.5 mm (55% deficit).
