India's Weather forecast for February 18

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the combination of a strong, lower-level wind discontinuity over Central India and the inflow of moist winds from the Bay of Bengal has been causing precipitation over Central India. Now, these conditions are expected to migrate southwestward, thereby affecting the western and southern states, until Thursday, February 18. Therefore, light to moderate rains, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail have been predicted at a few places across Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours.

Further, light to moderate rainfall at a few places, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and hail at isolated places, are very likely over Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday; and over Jharkhand, Telangana, and North Interior Karnataka on Thursday. On Thursday, the same alert will be placed over Jharkhand, Telangana, and North Interior Karnataka, with Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada also retaining this advisory. The alert urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough weather. Thanks to the aforementioned conditions, Central Indian subdivisions witnessed rainfall activity on Tuesday as well, with the IMD recording precipitation at a few places over East Madhya Pradesh, and over isolated places across West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Moreover, thunderstorms were also observed at a few places in Madhya Pradesh, and isolated areas in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, and Odisha.

While unseasonal, these rains have become a common occurrence in these regions over the past few years, particularly in the months of February and March. When these showers maintain a low intensity, they can be of great help for rabi crops like wheat, peas, and mustard. However, a heavy downpour of rain and hail can destroy the crops altogether, and cause enormous losses to farmers. The rains forecast over the next 48 hours will be of moderate-intensity at best, and are therefore unlikely to cause any major destruction. The likelihood of hair, however, remains a cause for concern, especially considering Central India has recorded an all-time high wheat sowing thus far.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

Parts of central India are likely to experience wet weather conditions for the next 24 hours. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a strong wind discontinuity in the lower levels over central India along with the moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move southwestward and persist up to February 18. Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall at a few or many places with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and hail are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours.

Moreover, light to moderate rainfall at a few places with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and hail are likely over Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra on February 17-18. Similar conditions will prevail over Jharkhand, Telangana, and North Interior Karnataka on February 18. Owing to these rough weather conditions, an orange alert has been placed over west Madhya Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra for today. Meanwhile, a feeble western disturbance is expected to bring isolated rainfall or snowfall over Uttarakhand on February 17-18.

Low wind speeds and high relative humidity will allow dense fog to form in some pockets of Punjab on the morning of Wednesday and Thursday. Dense to very dense fog is also possible over some isolated of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and west Uttar Pradesh in the morning hours of February 18. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to experience some isolated snow due to a feeble but persistent cyclonic circulation for the next couple of days. Maximum temperatures will be cooler than normal by up to 8°C across much of central Highland and Deccan Plateau from Thursday to Saturday. Minimum temperatures will be warmer than normal across much of the country during this forecast period.
