In UFC 257, the UFC biggest star heads back to the Octagon in the main event as Conor McGregor faces off with Dustin Poirier in a lightweight battle.

McGregor and Poirier met in a 2014 featherweight bout, with McGregor scoring a knockout victory in less than two minutes. Poirier is a different fighter than he was then, and McGregor has only fought at lightweight twice in the UFC. The UFC 257 clash also carries some extra weight as the lightweight division undergoes a major transformation in the wake of lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's apparent retirement.

UFC 257 McGregor vs Poirier prediction

Although it was more than six years ago now, McGregor has a huge psychological advantage over Poirier owing to that previous stoppage in the pair’s first meeting.

‘The Diamond’ is a far better operator now and should pose a much tougher test, but it’s still tough to see McGregor throwing away the potential for a huge second showdown with arch-rival Khabib. Another stoppage for the brash Dubliner, but this time in a later round.

McGregor is such a polarizing figure. There are fans who love him, and there are people who absolutely detest him. The latter are going to be disappointed, because McGregor (-300) will pick up the win over Poirier in this one. However, he is too expensive on the 2-way line, so get more specific.

Take MCGREGOR BY KO/TKO OR DQ (-190) on the 7-way line, which is still a little expensive, but worth the price. He’ll get it done, setting up a potential title bout against Khabib again, which will be what most UFC fans will open up their wallets to see.

In addition, taking UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-185) is a little pricey but also worth the risk. Eight of The Notorious’ past 10 fights have each cashed in Round 1 or 2. As such, playing MCGREGOR IN ROUND 1 (+160) or MCGREGOR IN ROUND 2 (+375) is the way to go.

UFC 257 fight card

Saturday’s lightweight bout will be a rematch of Poirier and McGregor’s 2014 fight at UFC 178, which McGregor won by TKO in the first round. Poirier last fought in June, defeating Dan Hooker by unanimous decision. McGregor meantime, last fought almost exactly one year ago, needing just 40 seconds to take down Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. The Irish superstar announced his retirement a few months later, but has apparently been lured back into the ring for a tantalizing rematch with Poirier.

While many gave McGregor the advantage in 2014, the two are more evenly matched this time around, with Poirier (26-6-0) and McGregor (22-4-0) both weighing in at 155 pounds, with almost identical reach and leg reach. Vegas oddsmakers have McGregor as the overwhelming favorite in the fight, though Poirier has said he’s adjusted both his physical and mental strategy to take on Mr. Notorious.

Aside from McGregor vs. Poirier, the rest of the UFC 257 fight card is packed with a lot of juicy matchups. The lightweight co-main event features the aforementioned Hooker taking on Michael Chandler, in Chandler’s UFC debut. The third lightweight bout pits Ottman Azaitar vs. Matt Frevola, with Azaitar looking to extend his perfect 13-0 record as he squares off against “The Steamrolla.”

Two women’s bouts are also on the UFC 257 fight card. Amanda Ribas takes on Marina Rodriguez in the women’s strawweight fight, while a lightweight matchup sees Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye.
