TNT (originally an abbreviation for Turner Network Television) is an American basic cable television channel owned by WarnerMedia Studios & Networks that launched in October 1988. TNT's original purpose was to air classic films and television series to which Turner Broadcasting maintained spillover rights through its sister station TBS. Since June 2001, the network had shifted its focus to dramatic television series and feature films, along with some sporting events (including NBA, NHL, the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament and professional wrestling from AEW Rampage), as TBS shifted its focus to comedic programming.

As of September 2018, TNT was received by approximately 89.573 million households that subscribe to a subscription television service throughout the United States.

TNT HD is a high definition simulcast feed of TNT, which broadcasts at a picture resolution of 1080i; the HD feed launched on May 21, 2004, inaugurated with the network's coverage of Game 1 of the 2004 NBA Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves. TNT has been criticized for its practice of airing a significant amount of 4:3 standard definition content stretched to 16:9 on its HD feed, utilizing a nonlinear process similar to the "panorama" setting on many HDTVs that some viewers have nicknamed Stretch-o-Vision.

Though other cable channels have also fallen into this practice for their HD simulcast feeds, TNT has been the one most commonly cited since it was one of the first channels to offer such a simulcast. The nonlinear stretching process leaves objects in the center of the screen with approximately their original aspect ratio; objects at the left and right edges are distorted.

All HD programming are broadcast in 5.1 surround sound.

In January 2009, a version of TNT launched in Germany as TNT Serie. The channel shows a wide variety of older and recent American drama and comedy programs (such as 30 Rock, Murder, She Wrote, Monk, Six Feet Under, Seinfeld, ER, The King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Falling Skies). TNT Serie maintains two audio channels: one with the original English language audio track and one with a German-dubbed soundtrack. In June 2009, the German version of TCM was relaunched as TNT Film. TNT also has a comedy channel which shows 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. TNT Comedy also maintains two audio channels: TNT Serie, TNT Comedy and TNT Film both launched high definition simulcast feeds in the fall of 2010. On June 14, 2021, it was announced that TNT would be rebranding their channels into Warner TV from September 25, 2021.

TNT Mexico is a pay-TV channel, owned and operated by Warner Media Entertainment. It is a sister channel to the American television channel TNT. The feed available in Mexico was launched in the mid-1990s, with its programming being focused on airing movies, awards ceremonies, concerts, TV series, sports, and documentaries. Middle-age adults are the channel’s main target audience.

Over the years, TNT has changed some of the features available on its shows. Initially, movies and series were dubbed to the country’s language, but that was eventually changed, as an option to use the original language was added on some pay-tv carriers. Now, users can decide if they want to watch the program dubbed in their native language, with or without subtitles, or on the show’s original language. Broadcast rights, especially for sports, differ between all Latin American countries, which means that a show aired by TNT Argentina may not necessarily be available in the Mexican feed.

Speaking about sports, TNT Mexico has sporadically included football and basketball games on its general programming. Football competitions covered by TNT in Mexico have included Copa Libertadores games and Superliga Argentina matches. The Supercopa Argentina clash between Boca Juniors and River Plate held in 2017 was also aired on this channel, earning one of the highest ratings in this channel’s history.

TNT Mexico started broadcasting their shows on Standard Definition format, but a High Definition feed was made available for users to watch since 2009. A downscaled version of the HD feed is available for users who still use Standard Definition TV sets.

Anyone living in Mexico, vacationing in the country, or planning to relocate there soon, can benefit from a stable Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This assists you in keeping internet activity private, torrenting, or unlocking geo-restricted streaming media sites such as US Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

Additionally, if you are a Mexican citizen and plan to travel outside the country, a VPN can enable you to access everything you want at home, including Netflix Mexico, local channels such as Televisia, Canal 5, and Azteca 7, as well as online banking.

If you don’t know what a VPN is, then don’t worry. The software sets up an encrypted tunnel that routes all the internet traffic to and from your device via an intermediary server in a location of your choice. This masks your real IP address and makes it appear that you’re in your chosen location, hence the ability to unblock geo-restricted content. What’s more, the encryption aspect is a nifty feature that makes it almost impossible for hackers or government agencies to snoop on your online behavior.

1. NordVPN

Panama-headquartered NordVPN has carefully engendered a privacy-focused reputation due to a true ‘zero-logs’ policy. The provider runs a network of over 5,000 servers spanning 60 countries, with Mexico hosting 10. Connecting to a server in Mexico or any other part of the world is a hassle-free process.

NordVPN is strongly focused on media streaming and unblocking geo-restricted feeds. It easily unblocks sites such as US Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video, ESPN, Sky, Sling TV, and more.

This provider’s customizability is a particularly strong suit. Users can select servers optimized for certain features including streaming HD video, double VPN, and Tor over VPN. The desktop version includes a primer on how to find the best servers to use for specific tasks, such as unblocking Netflix.

NordVPN does not store any user data – this is the zero-logs policy we referred to earlier in the mini-review, so we don’t foresee any concerns on the privacy front. Security standards are similarly robust – NordVPN uses 256-bit encryption, the OpenVPN protocol, an internet kill switch, and DNS leak protection.

2. Surfshark

Surfshark offers access to more than 1,000 servers across 60+ countries. It provides generally high download speeds and exceptional unblocking ability, which makes it a great choice for anyone looking to use Mexican streaming services and popular platforms like Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video from abroad. Unlike most other VPNs, which tend to allow six simultaneous internet connections at most, Surfshark lets you use as many connected devices as you like.

This VPN doesn’t skimp on security. It keeps you safe using 256-bit AES encryption, online protection against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks, and a kill switch that stops all traffic if you lose your connection suddenly. There’s also the option to block ads and malware automatically, as well as a NoBorders mode for use in countries with strict online censorship. Surfshark doesn’t log any personally identifiable information but you can pay in cryptocurrency if you’d like. 24/7 customer support is available via live chat and email.

Surfshark provides easy-to-use apps for iOS, MacOS, Android, Windows, and Linux. It can also be manually configured for use on your home router.

3. Express VPN

ExpressVPN offers more than 3,000 servers to choose from in 94 countries worldwide, including options in Mexico. Its registration in the British Virgin Islands means it isn’t subjected to state-mandated data retention laws.

ExpressVPN reliably unblocks a variety of geo-restricted streaming media services, including US Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, ESPN, and more. As mentioned earlier, this provider is known for its blazing-fast download speeds. An additional perk is round-the-clock support via a live chat option.

ExpressVPN uses world-class security standards including 256-bit AES encryption, which is often referred to as ‘military-grade.’ Additional features include an internet kill switch and DNS leak protection, so your information always remains secure within the encrypted tunnel.

4. CyberGhost

Romania-headquartered CyberGhost has made a concerted effort to improve its quality of service after it was acquired by Crossrider, an Israeli firm registered in the UK, in the latter half of 2017. CyberGhost offers more than 5,700 servers in 89+ countries including approx 40 in Mexico.

CyberGhost’s app can help you pick a server to unblock specific services such as US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. Just select Unblock Streaming mode on the main screen and choose your platform.

This provider offers 256-bit encryption, perfect forward secrecy, an internet kill switch, and DNS leak protection by way of security features. These are top-notch protocols so no worries on this front.

5. IPVanish

IPVanish scores points on privacy, speed, and top-notch customer support. This provider currently offers over 1,000 servers spread across 60 countries including five in Mexico.

IPVanish is headquartered in the US, which may be a cause for concern among privacy-focused users. But it’s one of the few VPN companies that choose to operate its entire network of servers independently, rather than renting or outsourcing. This means it has complete control over the traffic flowing through its servers. An additional layer of security is the fact that IPVanish doesn’t log any personal information, so it has nothing to share in the first place.

IPVanish is a known favorite with torrenters and Kodi users because it enables them to download the Android APK directly to their device. The interface is remote control-friendly for Kodi devices that lack a keyboard and mouse. It works with several streaming media sites such as BBC iPlayer.

Should I use a free VPN for Mexico?

In your search for a suitable provider, it’s likely that you will stumble across free VPN services. They’re heavily advertised across the internet and come with tempting offers, such as the ability to sign up without a credit card. But that’s usually where the allure ends.

Free VPN providers have a sordid history of trying to monetize their service via invasive advertisements, malware, or unethical data mining. At the very least you will experience interruptions in service as they try to upgrade you to a paid service.

Is public Wi-Fi safe to use in Mexico?

Public wi-fi isn't safe anywhere. We strongly recommend you connect to a VPN when using public wi-fi to ensure that no one can intercept and read data being sent or received through the wi-fi network. The VPN's encryption ensures that any data that ends up in the hands of hackers cannot be deciphered, and is therefore useless to them.

Public wi-fi networks that do not require passwords are more easily hijacked by hackers, who can redirect victims to phishing pages, distribute malware, and steal data. Hackers can also set up their own public wi-fi hotspots and trick victims into connecting to them. Regardless, a VPN will keep you safe.
