Borussia Dortmund vs Sevilla: Match Preview

Dortmund fell behind to Sevilla in the first leg at Estadio Ramon, but Mahmoud Dahoud levelled the scores in the 19th minute before Erling Braut Haaland netted twice before the interval to make it 3-1.

Sevilla scored a second late on through Luuk de Jong to hand themselves a chance ahead of the second leg, but BVB will fancy their chances of finishing the job inside their own stadium to make the quarter-finals.

Dortmund picked up 13 points from their six Group F matches to top their section, and they have actually won nine of their last 14 European matches during an impressive run of form.

Last season, the Bundesliga giants reached the round of 16, losing to eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain, and they have not progressed to the quarter-finals since the 2016-17 campaign, where they were beaten by Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Edin Terzic's side will enter Tuesday's clash off the back of a 4-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, which has left them down in sixth position in the table, four points off the top four.

Sevilla are far from out of the last-16 tie, but they not enter this contest in the best of form, having lost four of their last five matches in all competitions, including a shock 2-1 loss at Elche in La Liga on Saturday.

Julen Lopetegui's side are now only six points clear of fifth-placed Real Sociedad in Spain's top flight, while they lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on March 3 to suffer a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

Sevilla are only actually in their sixth Champions League campaign, but they made the quarter-finals in 2017-18, while the Spanish outfit are the most successful team in the history of the UEFA Cup/Europa League, winning the European competition on six occasions, including last term.

Lopetegui's team impressed in the group stages this season, picking up 13 points to finish second behind Chelsea in Group E, while they have lost just six of their 24 games against German opposition in European competition, which will hand them confidence heading into this game.

Los Nervionenses also recorded a 1-0 victory when they last travelled to Dortmund during the group stages of the 2010-11 Europa League, although the same scoreline on Tuesday would see them lose on away goals.

GAME CHANGERS

Sevilla’s defending has been superb since the turn of the year largely thanks to their centre-back pairing of Carlos and Kounde and keeper Bounou, though few teams can cope with Dortmund’s menace in the final third.

Top performers for Sevilla have been Youssef En Nesyri with 17 goals, Lucas Ocampos with 6 goals and 4 assists and Munir El Haddadi with 6 goals 1 assist.

A mix of calamitous defending and sparkling attacking play has produced over 2.5 goals in each of Borussia Dortmund’s last six matches.

With Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho a particularly potent duo, having the Norway forward back fit and firing makes them a far more dangerous proposition for the knockout stages.

England winger Jadon Sancho is another player back on track after possibly being distracted by transfer talk earlier this term.

Top performers for Borussia Dortmund have been Erling Haaland with 22 goals 3 assists, Jadon Sancho 9 goals 7 assists and Marco Reus 4 goals 4 assists.

Borussia Dortmund vs Sevilla: Stats

Haaland is the top scorer in the Champions League this season with 10 goals in his six matches after also netting twice in the first leg.

The Dortmund striker has 20 goals in his first 14 UEFA Champions League appearances. He is now Norway's top goalscorer in the competition, with one more than Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who netted 19 in the competition.

Haaland also scored twice in Dortmund’s 4-2 defeat against Bayern last weekend, meaning he has 30 goals in all competitions this season. He has scored 47 times in 47 competitive games for Dortmund.

BVB have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2016/17 under Thomas Tuchel.

Dortmund are unbeaten in eight home games in the Champions League (W5, D3).

Die Schwarzgelben are also on a run of seven Champions League games without defeat (W5, D2). They last managed that in 2012/13, the last time they reached the final.

Borussia Dortmund vs Sevilla: Betting tips

The first leg was higher scoring because of two early goals — a deflected Suso goal for Sevilla and a 25-yard wonder goal from Mahmoud Dahoud for Dortmund. That game had just 2.3 combined xG, with all three big-scoring chances being converted on top of the two low-percentage goals.

The onus will be on Sevilla to create chances, and it’s one of the slowest tempo and build-up teams in Europe. Sevilla isn’t used to chasing goals, and Dortmund will be focused on protecting its one-and-a-half goal lead due to away goals.

Dortmund knows its defensive liabilities and will probably keep more numbers behind the ball, creating long periods of slow possession build-up for Sevilla that doesn’t lead to clear scoring chances.

We project 2.72 goals in this game, so we like under three goals as our top play and hope great finishing and fluke goals don’t send this one over the number.
