How Many Halloween Movies Exist?
There are currently 13 Halloween films available. The 13 films, which were released between 1978 and 2022, are divided into five timelines, which we will look at below.

SubgroupsThe Halloween franchise can arguably be divided into five major watch groups, which were unintentionally (or at least appear to be) created by the franchise zigzagging between storylines and character arcs, and as directors took the films in their own directions. The first is the original Halloween film, which is grouped with its sequel Halloween II. Both films revolve around slasher Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode. This is only the beginning of their 40-year struggle. The following films in the series are Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, which follow slasher Myers as he pursues his own niece Jamie Lloyd. The third group consists of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later from 1998 and Halloween: Resurrection from 2002. Halloween H20 and its sequel pick up with Laurie Strode after the events of 1981's Halloween II, completely ignoring Jamie Lloyd's storyline from the previous group. Then there's the'miscellaneous' group, which includes 1982's Halloween III: Season of the Witch, as well as Halloween and Halloween II, both directed by Rob Zombie, which stand apart from the rest of the franchise. How To Stream All Halloween Movies In Order
The first way to watch the films is to start with the 1978 original.
1. Halloween (1978)
Jamie Lee Curtis's first major film role was in the original Halloween. In the film, we meet Michael Myers, who murders his 17-year-old sister when he is only six years old. The murderer is imprisoned, but in 1978 he escapes during a transfer and returns to his hometown to murder more people. Myers is obsessed with Strode from the start, and thus begins the first of many rampages.
2. Halloween II (1981)
In Halloween II, a direct sequel to the original, Michael Myers continues to pursue survivor Strode while she is recuperating in a hospital (the film actually begins on the same night). To prevent her from fleeing, he cuts phone lines and smashes cars. However, while Laurie appears to have nine lives, those who stand in the way of the killer are not so fortunate, and the bodies pile up. Strode is Myers' younger sister, and we learn about her in this film.

3. Halloween (2018)
Following that, watch the first of David Gordon Green's reboots of the film series. Myers has been imprisoned for 40 years, but now that the franchise has resurfaced, he manages to escape. After a lifetime spent processing the killer's actions, he returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, where viewers find Laurie drinking heavily. The film follows Myers as he searches for his favorite victim once more. She is placed in protective custody, but even this is insufficient to stop the slasher's evil plans.
4. Halloween Kills (2021)
Green returns to direct, continuing the battle between Laurie and her long-time tormentor Myers. Laurie is back in the hospital after suffering yet another terrible injury. She reunites with Tommy Doyle (played by Anthony Michael Hall from The Breakfast Club), whom she babysat years ago, and he attempts to rally a gang to take on Myers.
5. Halloween Ends (2022)
The final installment in the reboot trilogy, Halloween Ends, sees Jamie Lee Curtis leave the franchise after 44 years. Myers and Laurie square off one last time.

6. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Laurie (still played by Curtis) returns to the screen in this film. She explains that she faked her death to avoid Myers, but this is soon insufficient, as he is able to track her down despite the fact that she is living a new life as a headmistress under a new name. Myers appears when students from the boarding school leave on an immaculately timed school trip to Yosemite, leaving only a few people behind.
7. Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Three years later, Myers returns to try to kill Laurie once more. Laurie has returned to a psychiatric facility to deal with the fact that she accidentally killed someone. She's been attacked by Myers so many times by this point that it still comes as a surprise when she gets seriously duffed up by the serial killer.
At the same time, Myers' childhood home has been transformed into the set of a reality television show. However, Myers kills a student while setting up the show. When the others go in search of answers, Myers starts bumping them.
Jamie Lloyd's route
This series of films runs concurrently with the other films starring Curtis and focusing Myers' attention on Laurie. In this case, the killer is after Jamie Lloyd, Laurie Strode's daughter. Commence with Halloween (1978) and Halloween II.
8. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Myers returns to his hometown of Haddonfield in the fourth installment of the franchise. He’s been in a coma for 10 years but now he’s back and he’s after his niece Jamie Lloyd who is living with her foster family. Samuel Loomis, who is Myers’s former psychiatrist, chases Myers. It marks the beginning of Loomis's more prominent role in the franchise.
In the film, Strode is confirmed dead, and there are references to her instead. That means when she pops up later, audiences are asked to indulge in a bit of suspension of disbelief.
9. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
Myers has returned to Haddonfield, and he is once again attempting to murder his niece. She is in a mental institution, and psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis makes a link between the psyche of Lloyd and Myers. There’s the threat of an ancient Druid curse, indications of experiments to clone Michael’s evil, and, as usual, there are lots of killings.
10. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
This time Myers is stalking Haddonfield again (why anyone still lives there, we do not know). But instead of just focusing his attention on Jamie Lloyd (and her baby), the whole of the Strode family (and those associated with them) are in danger. Dr Loomis is back and Paul Rudd, in one of his first film roles ever, stars as Tommy Doyle.
Stand-alone films
These films stand alone and are completely unrelated to the other events in the franchise.
11. Halloween III: Season of the Witch, 1982
Written and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace but with Halloween director John Carpenter onboard as a producer, this stand-alone film is about a doctor and the daughter of a murder victim who discover a madman’s plot to go on a murder rampage. It gets quite bonkers - the murderer is a mask maker, he’s going to use an ancient Celtic ritual (including a stone from Stonehenge), and there are microchips on masks, which kill people when they watch a TV commercial.
12. Halloween, 2007
A remake of the 1978 original, 2007’s Halloween from director Rob Zombie has Myers chasing Strode on Halloween. The film has Scout Taylor-Compton, whose acting credits include 13 Going on 30 and The Runaways, playing Curtis’s role. The film reportedly cost just $15 million and pulled in $80.3 million worldwide, showing once again the power of the franchise, despite the fact that Zombie’s films failed to dazzle the critics.
13. Halloween II, 2009
In the second film from Zombie, Taylor-Compton is back playing Strode. In the film, Zombie further develops the relationship between Strode and Myers, exploring their psychological problems. When Strode finds out that she is Michael’s sister it nearly pushes her over the edge. Myers is - you guessed it - back in Haddonfield and there are visions of their dead mother’s ghost and a younger version of the killer to contend with too.

Following a new TV deal with Miramax, the future of the Halloween franchise appears to be bright. According to Deadline, this new agreement includes a Halloween TV series as well as a first-look agreement for other international television projects.
