In total you spend about one third of your life on your mattress, so it plays a big role in your general health and well being as well as energy levels, alertness and mood. The durability of a latex mattress can vary depending on whether you buy a synthetic or organic latex mattress. Some latex mattresses come with warranties for as many as 20 to 25 years.
Hybrid mattresses are a fusion of foam and innerspring mattresses. They usually contain a base layer of foam, a coil support system, and a top layer of foam. They don’t last as long as other types of mattresses, on average, a hybrid mattress needs to be replaced after 6 years.
Waterbed mattresses come in two types: hard-side and soft-side. Hard-side mattresses are the traditional type of vinyl waterbed mattresses, while soft-side are encased in a foam “box” and look much like other mattresses. They can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years.
Tips to extend the life of mattress
There are a few things you can do to help keep it in tip-top shape and stretch its lifespan a bit:
Ventilate your bedroom well. Keep the windows open in the morning so the room airs out.
When washing sheets and ;uilt sets, use a hot wash with temperature of 60 C or more. This is the temperature ideal for killing germs and bacteria.
Use a cover or protector to reduce the amount of material that seeps out of the sheets and into the mattress. You can wash and change it regularly for better hygiene.
After any warm nights where excessive sweating may have occurred, in the morning, do not make your bed straight away. Leave the duvet uncovered with the sheets exposed. This is a quick way for everything to air and dry, reducing the breeding ground for bacteria and also reducing odors.
