Green poop is a condition in which the feces have a green coloring or tint. Green poop may be normal in some cases, such as in breast-fed infants. Green stool can also be caused by taking iron supplements or eating certain foods, such as green leafy vegetables. Green stool can also indicate a problem with food digestion due to a disease, disorder or other abnormal process.

The normal color of stool or feces is generally light to dark brown. Stool gets its color from bile, which is a yellow-green fluid produced in the liver that helps to digest your food. As food passes through your digestive tract, digestive enzymes break down the bile, resulting in various shades of brown stool. When a disease or condition causes diarrhea, food passes through the digestive tract rapidly, and stools may be green because digestive enzymes did not have time to turn the stool brown, which is noted in Healthgrades.

Green Poop's Symptoms

Common symptoms

It is important to know what to look out for regarding the more serious causes of stool discoloration. These can include conditions such as diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, and cancer, which usually manifest with bleeding from the anus.

Symptoms that may accompany green poop:

*Dark, tarry stools

*Large amounts of blood passed from the rectum

*Blood in the toilet bowl

*Itchy anus

*Swollen blood vessels in the rectum

*Small tears in the skin of the anus

*An urge to keep passing stools even when the bowel is empty

*A small channel developing between the end of the bowel and the skin of the anus

As well as any traces of blood in the stool, or general bleeding from the anus, pay attention to any other symptoms linked with stool discoloration. These include light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting, especially if vomit contains blood as well.

Serious symptoms that might indicate a life-threatening condition

In some cases, green stool associated with severe diarrhea or other symptoms can indicate a serious or life-threatening condition that should be immediately evaluated in an emergency setting, Healthgrades pointed out.
