The Three Lions had their 2018 World Cup dream shattered in the semi-finals against the same opposition and must put those memories to one side in order to get off the mark with a win at this delayed European Championship.

England vs Croatia team news

Harry Maguire won’t be fit to start for England as he recovers from an ankle injury, meaning he must choose whether to ditch the 4-3-3 system and play three at the back. If he stays with a back four, it’s between Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady to partner John Stones.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson’s lack of game time means Southgate will choose from Kalvin Phillips or 17-year-old Jude Bellingham to operate in central midfield alongside Declan Rice. Mason Mount and Phil Foden seem certain starters behind captain Harry Kane which leaves one place left in the attack between Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, and Raheem Sterling.

Croatia vs England Head-to-Head facts

This will be the eighth meeting between these two sides, with England winning four and losing two of the previous seven.

One of those England victories came in their only previous meeting at a major tournament, with a teenage Wayne Rooney helping England to a 4-2 victory in the group stages at Euro 2004.

Croatia got revenge with a victory over Steve McClaren‘s England which denied them a place at Euro 2008, although the last two meetings have seen England win by a 9-2 aggregate scoreline – winning 4-1 in September 2008 before sealing their place at the 2010 World Cup with a 5-1 triumph at Wembley.

England vs Croatia prediction

England go into the game as favorite with the bookies. Gareth Southgate’s side are 4/6 to win at Betfair while the odds for a Croatia victory is 9/2. The draw is 13/5.

England are 9/2 to win 1-0, while a 0-0 draw is 7/1.

England gained revenge for losing 2-1 to Croatia in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup by beating them 2-1 later that year in the Nations League.

The two teams have met 10 times. England have won five matches while Croatia have managed to defeat England on three occasions, with two ending in a draw.

Predicted score: England 3 Croatia 1

A Look At England’s Betting Odds

England gained some revenge for going down to Croatia in extra-time in Russia by taking four points off their old rivals in the inaugural Nations League.

That included a 2-1 triumph at this venue when Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane responded to Andrej Kramaric’s 57th-minute opener.

Kane was the star performer as the Three Lions powered through qualifying for this tournament, being successful in seven of eight matches.

A whopping 21 goals were scored in four consecutive home victories, while Kane netted a dozen of the 37 strikes achieved overall.

While the captain leads from the front, an exciting supporting cast has emerged around him.

Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are already experienced on the international stage, but rising stars like Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Mason Mount add more attacking menace.

Southgate seems intent on employing an up-tempo, high-pressing gameplan and that can help England to overrun their opponents here.

Looking at the England vs Croatia odds, we like 7/4 for a home win and over 2.5 goals.

Croatia looked at the peak of their powers when finishing as spirited runners-up to France at Russia 2018 but have been less convincing since that tournament.

The Blazers did manage to top their qualifying pool ahead of Wales, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan but were only workmanlike in a number of those fixtures.

Two Nations League campaigns brought little success and they were beaten 1-0 away to Slovenia in the opening set of World Cup games, before beating Cyprus and Malta.

Head coach Zlatko Dalic will hope there has just been a temporary drop in intensity and that being back on a bigger stage will spark a return to top form.

However, we fear the international retirement of Ivan Rakitic and the advancing years of Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic have played a part.

Defenders Domagoj Vida and Dejan Lovren are also on the wrong sides of 30, so this could be a turning point before a period of transition.

If the Blazers do begin to tire late on, England have the pace up front and strength in depth on the bench to take advantage.

Let’s finish off our England vs Croatia betting tips by taking 9/4 for the hosts to score most goals between 75:01 minutes and full-time.

Can England get Euro 2020 off to a winning start?

England's second team secured a 1-0 win over Romania in their final warm-up game ahead of the Euros and following the match it was announced that Brighton's Ben White would replace the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad. Henderson played 45-minutes of that game against Romania, missing a penalty in the process, but there was no sign of Maguire and that may well be why White got the call-up. Henderson is unlikely to start against Croatia but England have others options in that positions including Rice, Phillips and Bellingham. Grealish has impressed all season for club and country and it will be interesting to see if Southgate can find a space in his starting eleven for the in-form Aston Villa midfielder, as we believe he could be one of the stars of the tournament.

Croatia lost their last friendly 1-0 against Belgium and head into the opening game of Euro 2020 in a mixed run of form that has produced two wins, three defeats and one draw from their last six outings. Despite being without the experience and talent of Rakitic, Mandzukic and Corluka for this tournament, there is still plenty of quality in the Croatia squad. Lovren, Vida and Vrsaljko are all experienced defenders, while in midfield Modric captains the side at the age of 35 and Kovacic, Brozovic, Vlasic and Pasalic offer fresher legs and lots of technical ability. Perisic still remains a threat in the final third and Kramaric has a good record at international level, while Rebis is hard-working and can chip in with the odd goal now and again.
