True crime anthology series Dirty John that had Netflix viewers gripped is back tomorrow with a new story.

The first season, released in 2018, followed the story of interior designer Debra Newell and her relationship with John Meehan, which quickly took a nightmarish turn when his true, deceitful nature and suspicious past come to light. It was based on a podcast of the same name.

Series two focuses on a new dramatization, which like the first, is based on a true story. This time around, the show looks at the case of Betty Broderick and her divorce from her ex-husband, which hit headlines and ended in tragedy.

The release date for the second series of the show is sooner than you’d think; Friday, August 14, to be precise.

Netflix has also released a trailer for the show, which you can catch above.

Dirty John season 2’s Plot

While season one told the story John Meehan (Eric Bana), a conman and pathological liar who wormed his way into the life of Debra Newell (Connie Britton), season two focuses on the life of Betty Broderick.

Amanda Peet stars in Dirty John as Broderick, who was convicted in 1991 of killing her ex-husband Daniel (played by Christian Slater) and his wife Linda (Rachel Keller).

The real-life Broderick was born Elisabeth Anne Bisceglia in 1947 and met husband Daniel Broderick III, who was training to become a lawyer, while the pair were both studying at university.

In Season two, it is the story of convicted murderer Betty Broderick (Peet) and her ex-husband (Slater) that spans the 1960s to the ’80s and chronicles the breakdown of their marriage that Oprah deemed one of “America’s messiest divorces” even before it ended in double homicide.

The first series of the show was based on the true story of John Meehan and Debra Newell and was inspired by the podcast of the same name. It centres around a story of love going wrong, after the show’s protagonist, John, manipulates his new partner.

The success of the series inspired a documentary of the real life story called Dirty John: The Dirty Truth.

Amanda Peet plays the role of Betty in the new drama, and the story sees the family going from struggling young students to a wealthy family. However, when Betty suspects Dan of cheating, things begin to go downhill in an extreme manner. Thanks to a successful legal career, Dan wins sole custody of the couple's children, and Betty plans her revenge.

The new series promises to be just as gripping as the first, so pencil the release date into your diary now.

Who’s in the cast of Dirty John season 2?

Here is a list of the actors and actresses who will tell the true crime story:

Amanda Peet will portray the central character of Betty Broderick, who was convicted of second degree murder and is serving time in jail.

Amanda, 48, made her film debut in 1995’s Animal Room.

Since then, she has starred in movies such as The Whole Nine Yards, Identity and The Way, Way Back in 2013.

On the small screen, she stars on comedy series, Brockmire.

Where are the Broderick children now?

Betty Broderick’s children – whose real names are Kimberly Broderick, Lee Broderick, Daniel Broderick IV, and Rhett Broderick – have all grown up to have settled lives and have families of their own. Kim Broderick, the eldest child, testified against her mother in real life at her trial in 1991, the Metro reported.

Christian Slater plays Betty’s ex-husband who she murdered in cold blood.

With a career which began in 1985, he has starred in 1998’s Heathers and television series Mr. Robot, which earned him a Golden Globe award.

He is also noted for his work as a voice over actor, being featured in The Ten Commandments, Igor, and Discovery Channel’s Dinosaur Planet.

Betty Broderick had a revolver in her handbag. In the early hours of November 5, 1989, the gun sat in her purse as she drove from her home to the one that her ex-husband Dan Broderick shared with his new wife Linda.

Betty had the keys in her handbag, too. She had stolen them from her daughter Lee and she used them to enter the house, taking the stairs to Dan and Linda's bedroom.

It was five in the morning and the couple were sleeping. Betty says she never intended to shoot them.

She just wanted to talk. But shoot is what she did, killing Linda instantly and injuring Dan. While he lay dying on the floor, Betty yanked the telephone from the wall and fled the house.

It was a crime that sent shockwaves through the wealthy enclaves of La Jolla, San Diego, where both Betty and Dan lived, and has since become the subject of the second season of Netflix's true crime drama Dirty John Season 2: The Betty Broderick Story, news.com.au reports.

Amanda Peet stars as Betty, with Christian Slater as Dan.

"What fascinated me about the story," Peet said, "is how such a normal person with a quote-unquote normal suburban life could snap."

What would lead Betty, a mother-of-five – two daughters, two sons and a baby who died in infancy – to kill her ex-husband and his new wife?

Dan was a celebrated legal mind, the head of the San Diego Bar Association and a graduate of Harvard Law School.

Theirs had been a world of high-society parties, million-dollar salaries, private school fees, country club memberships, Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta wardrobes. How did it all go so wrong?

Rachel Keller as Linda Kolkena

Rachel Keller stars as the second wife of Dan, who was also his former assistant.

Perhaps best known for her role in Legion, Rachel, 27, began her career in short films and had guest roles in The Mentalist and Supernatural.

She also starred in Netflix’s 2019 drama series The Society.

Lily Donoghue

It is not currently clear who she is as Betty had two daughters named Kim and Lee.

Lily has appeared in Dr Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets and 2019’s Black Christmas.

Facts about Dirty John season 1

In international regions, Netflix picked up the entire first season around a month after the series concluded on January 13th, 2019. Every episode was made available (including an additional documentary) on February 14th, 2019.

Season 1 of Dirty John finally arrived on Netflix in the United States in November 2019, specifically on November 25th. Netflix in the US has yet to get the documentary special Dirty John: The Dirty Truth.

The first season covered the true events of a single mother and interior designer falling for John Meehan.

Taking to social media, many couldn't help but question why the new season was named Dirty John, despite focused on an entirely new story to the first. One person wrote: "I don't get why it's called Dirty John. Wasn't that an entirely different story?" Another echoed this feeling, and was quick to point out the confusion: "The problem is: they named the first season Dirty John based on a true story and it had a bunch of fans but sometimes a second season is not necessary. It doesn't fit the first one: different characters, different story but nearly the same name?!... Just stop at the first one."

The first season in the Dirty John franchise, released on Netflix last year, told the harrowing true story of John Meehan (played by Eric Bana) and how he conned his wife Debra (played by Connie Britton into financial difficulty and emotionally abused her. This series focuses on the shocking divorce and subsequent criminal case between Betty and her husband who was having an affair with his assistant.

However, plenty of other Netflix fans had high praise for the new show. One person tweeted: "@DirtyJohnUSA is one of the most impactful shows there to watch, especially for woman. No matter how smart and successful we are all capable to fall for a con. Be safe be alert." A second fan commented: "Ooohhh perfect casting! #DirtyJohn", while a third wrote: "I know Christian Slater isn't the real Dan in #DirtyJohn: The Betty Broderick Story but the acting was so great that I hate him a little bit now."
