Just before New Year’s Eve, Alicia Arritt got a surprise text from her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Livelsberger, a U.S. special forces soldier.

"I'm in Denver," he wrote. "Are you single?"

They hadn't talked since 2022. Over the next few days, they exchanged some casual texts. On New Year’s Eve morning, Matthew sent photos and videos of a Tesla Cybertruck he rented.

"It's amazing," he wrote. "I feel like Batman."

"How fast is it?" she asked.

"Very fast," he replied.

They kept texting into the evening, and Matthew didn't show any signs of planning something drastic.

Two days later, FBI agents came to Alicia's home. They told her the sad news: Matthew, 37, had shot himself inside the Tesla just before it exploded in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day.

"They even asked if I wanted to watch the video of him dying," Alicia said. "It was awful to hear about it."

Investigators are still trying to figure out why Matthew committed suicide. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army’s special forces and lived in Colorado Springs.

At a press conference, officials said they found writings on Matthew's phone calling the country's leadership "weak" and the U.S. "terminally ill and headed towards collapse."

"This was not a terrorist attack," one letter said. "It was a wake-up call."

Officials added that Matthew likely had PTSD and might have had family or personal issues contributing to his actions.

Clues from the Ashes: Manifesto or Suicide Note

Police uncovered two notes on Livelsberger’s charred cellphone recovered from the Tesla. These notes, written in a digital app, provide insight into the torment he faced and the rationale behind his actions.

“This wasn’t a terrorist attack. It was a wake-up call,” Livelsberger wrote. “Americans only pay attention to violence and spectacle. What better way to get my point across than fireworks and explosives?”

A second note revealed a deeply personal struggle:

“Why now? I needed to cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I’ve taken.”

Livelsberger also issued a stark warning to his fellow servicemembers and the nation at large: “WAKE UP. We are being led by weak and self-serving leadership. We’re the United States of America—the greatest country to ever exist—but right now, we’re terminally ill and heading toward collapse.”
