Showdowns between these two once-great rivals may not be what they used to be when they went a long way towards deciding the destination of the Premier League title, but they still carry an extra edge.

Two former players who know all about the history of this fixture are now in the dugouts, and they will no doubt be demanding that the current crop do their predecessors justice.

Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be demanding an immediate reaction from his side after they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Sheffield United on Wednesday night, but for Arsenal's Mikel Arteta the message will be to continue where they left off last time out.

The Gunners swiftly avenged their FA Cup exit at the hands of Southampton by beating them in the Premier League, again at St Mary's, just three days later, with talented teenager Bukayo Saka further enhancing his burgeoning reputation with another goal and assist.

That result lifted Arsenal up to ninth in the standings and continued a resurgence which has catapulted them up towards the top of the form table, with only Manchester City having picked up more points over the last six games.

The scale of the turnaround has been stark; Arsenal have picked up 16 points from the last 18 on offer, more than doubling both their points tally and their goal tally in the process.

Arteta's men won just four of their first 14 league games this season but have now won five of their last six, while they netted 12 goals in those opening 14 games - whereas the last six outings have yielded 16 goals, according to SportsMole.

Historically, this has been one of the great Premier League rivalries. We all remember Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira's bust-up in the tunnel at Highbury as well as some outstanding counter-attacking United goals at the Emirates. Saturday’s encounter will be the 234th meeting between the sides, with United having the best record looking at our 233 previous battles. The Reds have come out on top 97 times, with Arsenal winning 84 and 52 ending all-square.

The Gunners won at Old Trafford earlier this season, thanks to Aubameyang’s penalty, while our last win against the Gunners came in the cup, in January 2019. Former Arsenal man Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for United, before Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial secured a thrilling 3-1 win, reported Manchester United.

Team News

Arsenal team news

Dani Ceballos and Pablo Mari are expected to return to training in the next few days, but are unlikely to be available.

Martin Odegaard could feature after joining on loan from Real Madrid, but is more likely to be used as an impact sub than a starter. Kieran Tierney will be evaluated, though it remains to be seen whether Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will return after being granted leave due to personal reasons.

Man Utd team news

Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof missed Wednesday's defeat, but Axel Tuanzebe struggled at the back so Solskjaer will hope to have one of his regular center-backs available.

Luke Shaw was also rested and should start at the Emirates along with Fred and Scott McTominay, with Nemanja Matic turning in a poor performance against Arsenal.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were also off the pace, and Edinson Cavani will likely come in for the latter.

Arsenal vs Man Utd Score Prediction

SportsMole and Evening Standard both predict that Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United.

Man United's defeat to Sheffield United makes this contest even more difficult to call; on the one hand Solskjaer will expect a response from his side, but on the other it was exactly the type of result which caused some to exercise caution over declaring them genuine title contenders.

We could learn a lot about United's true credentials in this match against an in-form Arsenal side which will be full of confidence as they attempt to rectify their appalling start to the season.

Man United's away record is far superior to Arsenal's home record this term and that is difficult to ignore, but in the end we can see these two sides sharing the spoils on Saturday.

Players to watch

Bukayo Saka has been in fine form for Arteta’s men of late. Against the Saints on Tuesday evening, the Gunners’ no. 7 showcased his talents with a goal and a precise assist for French frontman Alexandre Lacazette. Saka also scored in the 3-0 triumph over Newcastle in their previous Premier League fixture, a game where Aubameyang refound his goalscoring touch, with a brace. Lacazette has also started 2021 promisingly, registering three times in the top-flight since the turn of the year, and he is averaging 1.52 shots on target per 90 minutes this season.
