Funeral services honoring former President Jimmy Carter started on Saturday morning in Carter’s home state of Georgia, leading up to his official state funeral on Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

After Carter's death on Dec. 29, President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a national day of mourning, closing all executive departments and agencies of the federal government on the same day. Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days.

Monday, Jan. 6

All day: President Carter lies in repose at The Carter Center in Atlanta.

Tuesday, Jan. 7

6 a.m.: Public visitation at The Carter Center ends.
9:30 a.m.: President Carter will leave The Carter Center with a departure ceremony. His family will accompany his remains to Dobbins Air Reserve Base to board Special Air Mission 39 bound for Washington.
10:40 a.m.: Special Air Mission 39 leaves Dobbins for Washington.
12:45 p.m.: The flight lands at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and President Carter's remains will be transferred to a hearse in a ceremony.
1:15 p.m.: The Carter family and motorcade will travel to the U.S. Navy Memorial.
2 p.m.: President Carter's remains will be taken by horse-drawn caisson for a procession to the U.S. Capitol, and his casket will be carried into the Capitol Rotunda.
3 p.m.: Members of Congress will be able to pay respects in the Rotunda at this time.
7 p.m.-midnight: The public can pay respects while President Carter lies in state at the Capitol under military guard of honor.

Wednesday, Jan. 8

7 a.m.: President Carter continues to lie in state throughout the day.

Thursday, Jan. 9

7 a.m.: President Carter's time lying in state, and public visitation at the Capitol Rotunda, concludes.
9 a.m.: His remains will be moved from the Capitol to the Washington National Cathedral.
9:30 a.m.: President Carter's remains will arrive at the National Cathedral, with a brief arrival ceremony.
10 a.m.: The National Funeral Service begins.
11:15 a.m.: The funeral service concludes, and President Carter's family and his remains will ravel to Joint base Andrews.
11:45 a.m.: Special Air Mission 39 flies President Carter on his final trip back home to Georgia.
2 p.m.: The flight lands at Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore, Georgia.
3:30 p.m.: The motorcade with President Carter's family and his remains arrive at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
3:45 p.m.: The private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church begins.
4:45 p.m.: After the private service, a motorcade will travel through Plains back to his home. The public is invited to line this route, and the U.S. Navy will conduct a "Missing Man" flyover formation in his honor around the time the motorcade arrives at the Carter home.
5:20 p.m.: A private interment ceremony at the Carter home compound will take place.

Where is the Jimmy Carter funeral?

The memorial events for Carter - a Democrat who served as president from 1977 to 1981- will be in three parts.

The ceremonies started on Saturday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, and will move on Tuesday to Washington, then back to the southern state.

On 4 January, a motorcade drove through Carter's small hometown of Plains and stopped by his childhood home before proceeding to Atlanta, via the state capitol, for a public service at the Carter Center.
