Oscars 2022 - Who Are The Best Actors, Actresses, Directors |
Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday, and while titles like The Power Of The Dog and Dune received their expected nods, others, like Cruella, were surprisingly nominated or, like House Of Gucci, ignored—here are the biggest Oscars surprises and snubs.
The 94th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
*Of the 10 best picture nominees, half were released by streaming services or simultaneously online and in theaters. The ones that got more-or-less traditional releases from theatrical distributors were “Belfast,” “Drive My Car,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story.”
*This year’s celebration of all things movies comes as the film industry itself is in a period of great upheaval and transformation. The COVID-19 pandemic has battered the box office, which means that many of the top Oscar contenders lost money. None of those films has made much money at the box office. Ironically, the highest-grossing best picture nominee was “Dune,” despite its same-day streaming release. It earned nearly $400 million in global ticket sales, including $108 million domestically.
*Jane Campion's western The Power of the Dog (Netflix) led the nominations with 12 nods across various categories, including the coveted Best Picture category where it was placed alongside nine other nominees.
*Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic Dune followed closely behind with 10 nominations, while Kenneth Branagh's film memoir Belfast earned seven nominations, tying with Steven Spielberg's musical remake of West Side Story, which also received seven nods, including a shout in the Best Director category. All three titles earned a spot in the Best Picture category.
*Lady Gaga’s performance as Patrizia Reggiani in House Of Gucci wasn’t nominated by the Academy, even though it received nods from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild—and House Of Gucci only received one nod overall, for makeup and hair styling.
*Billie Eilish received her first Oscar nomination for the song “No Time To Die” from the James Bond flick of the same name, and Beyoncé earned her first for the song “Be Alive” from King Richard.
*Lin Manuel Miranda’s nomination for the song “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto could finally win him his EGOT—he’s previously won several Emmys, Grammys and Tonys.
*Though Kristin Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana in Spencer was ignored by the Screen Actors Guild, she earned a nomination for best leading actress, her first Oscars nod.
*Disney’s Cruella, the Emma Stone-led backstory to the villain from 101 Dalmations, received two nominations for costume design and hair and makeup.
*Drive My Car was nominated for both Best Picture and International Feature Film, and it has the potential to follow in the steps of 2020’s Parasite and win both.
*The smash blockbuster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home was rumored to be a surprise mainstream contender for Best Picture, but couldn’t secure the nomination and only received one overall, for Visual Effects.
Oscars 2022 - Netflix leads nominations“Don’t Look Up” and “The Power of the Dog” powered Netflix to 27 Oscar nominations Tuesday morning, the most of any studio, reflecting a year when streaming was again the dominant force in Hollywood. Netflix was the most nominated company for the third year in a row as the Los Gatos streamer continued to pour money into its film business in a quest to grow its subscriber base. Last year, Netflix had 35 nominations. In 2020, it led with 24. |
Oscar Nominees were unveiled in all 23 categories, from best picture to best director, along with the acting categories and crafts categories including best sound, best production design, best makeup and hairstyling, and best visual effects.
