Extraction (2020). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: In an underworld of weapons dealers and traffickers, a young boy becomes the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. Trapped by kidnappers inside one of the world's most impenetrable cities, his rescue beckons the unparalleled skill of a mercenary named Tyler Rake, but Rake is a broken man with nothing to lose, harboring a death wish that makes an already deadly mission near impossible.
Extraction is a triumph of pure kinetic energy. It keeps its story constantly pulsating forward for two hours, getting to the meat of the mission within the first 10 minutes without much in the way of detailed exposition. By the halfway point, the audience is being asked to come down from a legitimately spectacular 12-minute chase-and-fight sequence stitched together, 1917-style, to appear like a single take. Extraction never met a whip pan it didn’t love. This is a movie that is interested, first and foremost, in forward momentum.
Extraction, as flickering myth reported, is not a movie that’s going to live particularly long in the memory of anyone who sees it. It’s a cliché-ridden bullet ballet that’s elevated by a talented director with a great eye for an athletically-helmed action sequence and a grizzly leading performance from Chris Hemsworth that showcases every megawatt of his glowing movie star charisma. It has moments of exhilarating nastiness, for sure, but also wallows in the tropes of an overly familiar story that doesn’t seem to have an original bone in its body.

Release date: November 27, 2019 (United States)
Stars: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci
Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 95%
The Irishman (2019). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran is a man with a lot on his mind. The former labor union high official and hitman, learned to kill serving in Italy during the Second World War. He now looks back on his life and the hits that defined his mob career, maintaining connections with the Bufalino crime family. In particular, the part he claims to have played in the disappearance of his life-long friend, Jimmy Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who mysteriously vanished in late July 1975 at the age of 62.
The first 90 minutes see Martin Scorsese in his comfort zone, as we are introduced to Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro, playing both his de-aged younger self, 1970 set present-day self, and his wheelchair-bound elderly future self all with restraint and subtle grace despite the murderous nature of his jobs), a World War II veteran who goes from driving trucks to slowly working his way up the mafioso ladder (something he equates to one another, with the intriguing parallels demonstrated via the occasional flashback within a flashback) due to his acquaintance with Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci, commanding his underlings with even more restraint and sternness than Robert De Niro, making for a stark contrast to what moviegoers familiar with Martin Scorsese’s body of work might be expecting). Through these connections, he also gains the support of Russell’s cousin, trustworthy attorney Bill Bufalino as played by a hilariously scene-stealing Ray Romano.

Stars: Joey King, Joel Courtney, Jacob Elordi

The Kissing Booth 2 (2020). Photo: IMDB.

She'll have to juggle a long-distance relationship, getting into her dream college with her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney), and a new friendship with handsome classmate Marco (Taylor Perez). |6 Underground (2019). Photo: IMDB.|
Storyline: What's the best part of being dead? It's the freedom. The freedom to fight the evil which lurks in our world. 6 Underground's group of unnamed individuals have chosen to change the future. The team's brought together by enigmatic leader code-named 'One', whose sole mission is to ensure that, he and his fellow teammates will have their actions remembered.
According to Variety, “6 Underground” belongs to the school of “if you keep things moving fast enough, nobody will stop to question the logic.” The movie explains how One earned his fortune (in something called “micro-magnets,” which pays off late in a set-piece involving a massive superconductor) but never reveals how he became such an efficient killer, or why he’d want to be. Rather, the movie views the world as “an endless, evil, shitty loop … wrapped in red tape,” and sees the 6 Underground as the apolitical answer to our prayers. Their mission is to take out a dictator named Rovach (Lior Raz), the top offender on One’s private list of the world’s 10 most wanted evildoers — leaving the others for potential sequels, if Netflix judges the film’s performance worthy of the investment.
Release date: March 6, 2020 (United States)
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin
Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 37%
Spenser Confidential (2020). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) - an ex-cop better known for making trouble than solving it - just got out of prison and is leaving Boston for good. But first he gets roped into helping his old boxing coach and mentor, Henry (Alan Arkin), with a promising amateur. That's Hawk (Winston Duke), a brash, no-nonsense MMA fighter convinced he'll be a tougher opponent than Spenser ever was. When two of Spenser's former colleagues turn up murdered, he recruits Hawk and his foul-mouthed ex-girlfriend, Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger), to help him investigate and bring the culprits to justice. Inspired by Robert B. Parker's Wonderland, a best-selling novel by Ace Atkins.
According to The Guardian, it’s a dusty, connect-the-dots plot that offers nothing in the way of surprise even if Helgeland, and co-writer Sean O’Keefe, try to include some throwaway references to fake news, gentrification and the opioid crisis. Spenser is paired with wannabe MMA fighter Hawk, a partnership that’s built up to be fractious but in actuality is bizarrely easy, the two getting on almost instantaneously, denying us of any quippy conflict. Playing Hawk is rising star Winston Duke, who broke out in Black Panther and then Us, but he’s given nothing to do here other than throw the odd punch, a strangely thankless role given how the character played such an integral part in the original Spenser series of books.
Release date: September 23, 2020 (United States)
Stars: Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin
Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 91%
Enola Holmes (2020). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: England, 1884 - a world on the brink of change. On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she's gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), both set on sending her away to a finishing school for "proper" young ladies. Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London. But when her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway Lord (Louis Partridge), Enola becomes a super-sleuth in her own right, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history.
According to The New York Times, “Enola Holmes” converges around the stakes of democracy, including the work of suffragists fighting for widespread representation. The film is successful in balancing these broad themes with our heroine’s adventures, and that is due in large part to the work of Brown, whose energetic performance breathes new life into the Holmes creative world. On the surface, “Enola Holmes” is about a young woman in search of herself, but the film’s value comes from a deeper investigation of power, familial bonds and the risks of changing a world determined to stay the same.
Release date: May 21, 2021 (United States)
Stars: Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera
Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 67%
"Army of the Dead" (2021). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: With the abandoned, walled city of Las Vegas overrun with zombies, after a disastrous government fault, the billionaire casino magnate, Bly Tanaka, realises that he has left something in Sin City: $200 million to be more precise. For the time being, his mountains of cash are safe behind his impenetrable casino vault; however, the US President plans to nuke the entire city in less than 96 hours. Now, Tanaka is willing to pay $50 million to the decorated former mercenary, Scott Ward, and his hand-picked team to retrieve the money before the bomb obliterates the city. Indeed, this is a life-changing offer Scott cannot refuse; nevertheless, the rules have changed, and the horde of the walking undead seems to be more organised than they might have expected. But, time is running out. Can they return from Vegas in one piece and rich?
As the New York Post reported, when the massacre starts, the movie gets better. But the methods of murder are, like everything else, awfully self-serious and limited to mostly just plain old guns and knives. The “Zombieland” series is much fresher and more clever in the subversive ways it uses to off the creatures.
Release date: July 10, 2020 (United States)
Stars: Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts
Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 80%
"The Old Guard" (2020). Photo: IMDB.
Storyline: Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it's up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.
Besides, where the film is less well supported is in the screenplay, which Rucka himself adapted, and which gets bogged down in some decidedly muddy character motivation at a crucial point. Equally tone deaf is a score that sidesteps the timelessness of the central characters, feeling more disposable than eternal. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy, not least Layne’s terrific turn as the newbie with a fresh take on forever.
