*The huge difference for 2021-22 is that for the first time, Serie A will follow the pattern already adopted by the Premier League, Liga and Ligue 1, namely that the fixture list will be asymmetrical. That means the second half of the season will not just be a mirror of the first half, but rather organised in a completely different order.
Serie A Full Fixtures - Other notable, derby and biggest matches
The following weeks are where the first heavyweight clashes of the season really occur when in the third Napoli hosts Juventus and Milan hosts Lazio on the same weekend while Juve will host Milan the following week.
The two Derby d'Italia dates are on matchday nine in late October with Inter at home to Juve and then matchday 31 with the Bianconeri the hosts. As for the Derby della Madonnina between the two Milan clubs, matchday 12 in early November sees champions Inter play the away role with the 24th matchday the return arrangement at San Siro.
Serie A 2021-22 Fixtures: the schedule will be asymmetric
Serie A have made a revolutionary decision, that is the 2021/22 one, the schedule will be asymmetric. In other words, the second half of the term won’t be based on the first one. The Serie A fixtures for the 2021/22 Serie A season will follow a different format to previous campaigns and become similar to what is being implemented in the other European major leagues.
Traditionally in Italy, all the teams would play each other once in the first half of the season and then play at the opposite ground in the second half, with fixtures remaining in the same order – meaning that Round 1 and Round 19 would be identical, as would Round 20 and 38.
It was announced after a council meeting on Friday morning that the Lega Serie A will change the structure of the fixtures for the 2021/22 season.
Certainly, it will be interesting to see how this can affect the team, or if it will matter at all.
Essentially, the order in which the games are in the first half of the season will not just be copied for the second half, as has been the case now. Instead, the order as well as the internal order within the round will be different.
Instead of following the same order as the first half of the season, the matches played in the second half of the league campaign will be shuffled.
The only regulation is that the return game won’t be played until another eight games have been played, to avoid late matches in the first half being played early in the second
The criteria for doing the draw like so is that two teams cannot play one another again for another eight rounds after their first encounter in the championship.
This new schedule format has already been implemented in the English Premier League, La Liga in Spain, and Ligue 1 in France.
