On average, 2,000 babies are born every year exactly nine months after December 26, the most popular day for parents to conceive.
Data analyzed from the UK government live births database reveals September as a whole is by far the busiest month for new babies - as couples apparently make the most of festivities in December.
By contrast, the data shows December 25 and 26 are the least popular days for new births, presumably because parents are preoccupied with the mistletoe.
The analysis was undertaken by the greetings cards website thortful.com, which has launched a series of birthday cards to celebrate the UK’s most popular birthday.
“This data would appear to suggest that the UK had a very merry Christmas indeed last year,” said Thoughtful CEO Andy Pearce.
If you want to know how popular your birthday is, the UK Government has published the average number of births between 1995 and 2014.
The top five most common birthdays are:
1. 26 September
2. 25 September
3. 24 September
4. 27 September
5. 30 September
After Christmas and Boxing Day, the least popular dates for childbirth are January 1, followed by the 27 and 24 of December.
Outside of September, the most popular birthdays are unsurprisingly in October - the first four days of the month are all in the top 20.
September 26: the most common birthday

The most common birthday in the UK is September 26. On average, approximately 2000 babies are born on this day each year.
If births were evenly distributed throughout the year we would expect on average 1,800 births each day. But the average number of births on September 26 was around 2,000.
England and Wales is not the only country to have seen this trend. A similar analysis using data for New Zealand and the U.S shows a larger number of babies born in September.

Why is this the most popular birthday?

1. What comes nine months before late September and early October? Late December and early January. So that’s the festive season, alcohol and long nights.
So, maybe your parents, full of Christmas cheer, decided the perfect present would be to have a child.
Or, they were feeling particularly amorous over Christmas or New Year and family planning went out the window. Well, with the shops shut and mistletoe everywhere, what else was there to do?
2. Your parents were very sensible and wanted the best start in life for their child, by making sure your birthday fell early in the school year, so you would be as old as possible before they had to wave goodbye to you at the reception class door. That is the PG suggestion the ONS makes to explain the trend.
But the trend could be changing
Over recent years, summer has rivaled autumn for baby births. In both 2015 and 2013, July was the busiest month for midwives. This means Halloween conceptions are alarmingly popular.
In 2020, coronavirus and lockdown could change everything, what with those months of nights spent indoors and running out of things to watch on Netflix...

The Runners Up: September 25 and September 24
Unsurprisingly, the second most common birthday in the UK is September 25, and the third most common is September 24.
Again, the reason that these birthdays are so popular is because of an increase in conceptions around Christmas and planning for the back-to-school season. And the UK isn’t alone in this trend–September is also the most popular birth month in the U.S. and New Zealand!
While the Christmas holidays may be a popular time to make a baby there tend to be fewer babies born, with 6 of the 10 least popular dates of birth falling in the Christmas and New Year period.
This is likely to be due to the large number of bank holidays over the period. Hospitals will generally only be delivering natural births and carrying out emergency caesareans over the holidays. Induced births and elective caesareans are likely to be scheduled on alternative dates.
February 29 has the lowest total number of births over the twenty-year period because it only occurs once every 4 years. However, the average number of births on February 29 takes into account the day only occurs on a leap year, resulting in a value just under the overall daily average.
Interestingly April 1 is ranked low, perhaps due to parents electing not to have an April Fool’s Day baby where possible.
