Think of the women in your life in your family. International Women’s Day is a chance to highlight their success – and give something back to the community.

Below, we’ve collected 5 ideas for International Women’s Day celebrations at home.

Spend time with your mum

5 Brilliant Ideas to Celebrate Women’s Day at Home

Although mothers are invaluable, the sad reality is that they won't be there forever. In honor of International Women's Day, I suggest you do whatever it takes to spend as much quality time as possible with the incredible woman who bores you. Take her out to her favorite restaurant, rent a movie, or whip up a meal in the kitchen like usual to spend quality time together.

You'll learn a lot from her, and she'll value your time together more than you can imagine. This would help you have a stronger relationship with your parents by acknowledging their humanity.

The classic 'thank you' note

A sincere expression of appreciation is a wonderful way to kick off your International Women's Day festivities. These days, a digital shout-out, thoughtful email, or shareable social media card can all stand in for a traditional greeting card.

Rather not get down and create a blank template from scratch? Don't worry, because we've got your back. There are many lovely, free templates to be found on websites like Greetings Island and Canva, which may be printed, forwarded through email, or shared on social media. The official IWD website provides branded social media cards that you can use on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #EachforEqual if you want your postings to have a more polished look.

Host a Small Home Party

5 Brilliant Ideas to Celebrate Women’s Day at Home

This is a great idea if you want to do something creative with your loved ones at home. Have a party, thank the women in your life, and shower them with gifts. When you give something your all, you're much more likely to succeed at it. The best thing is that the committee responsible for celebrating International Women's Day has already set up the appropriate decorations. Today's official dress code color is purple.

Host a film screening

Audiences' understanding of gender roles, the importance we place on different issues, and the worldviews we develop are profoundly influenced by the films they watch.

There is a lot of work to be done to close the gender gap in Hollywood, despite the fact that we are reaching previously unheard-of levels of female representation in film. There were no female directors nominated for the 2020 Golden Globes or the Oscar for best director, despite the fact that women made up 20% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top 100 grossing films (2019 Celluloid Ceiling report).

Participate in an Edit-a-Thon

Have you heard? Women make up less than 20% of Wikipedia's biographies, and it's estimated that only 10% of the site's administrators are female.

However, improvements in these metrics can be attributed in no small part to Wikipedia "Edit-a-Thons."

Together, participants in what are called "Edit-a-Thons" create and publish new articles on the topic of women or revise existing ones to correct or expand upon coverage of the topic in question. (This work also includes addressing transgender and non-binary people in media.)

Plan your own "Edit-a-thon" and help improve the site. Check out the How to run an edit-a-thon on Wikipedia for some pointers. Then, you should read up on edit-a-thon advice from 500womenscientists.org and the Society of North Carolina Archivists.

Spend it alone – Treat yourself by doing absolutely nothing

If you want to stay at home, basking in the presence of your awesomeness that is totally fine with me. Just make sure you commit and go all out while you’re at it.

Reading is merely the beginning of what you can do while you're alone. Have some cookies, chocolate, or tea while curled up with a nice book. House of Cards, if political drama is your thing, will be available once again on Netflix at that time. And if you're looking for a feel-good film, there are plenty that pass the Bechdel test.

This is the year to branch out and try something different. Celebrate your personal fortitude and that of the other formidable women in your life.
